Looking for any information on Richard Ernest Jackson, my mother's stepfather. 1954 N.S.W. electoral roll shows him living in Double Bay, at same address as a previously unknown person called Doris Gertrude Jackson. Richard was born near Newcastle, N.S.W. in 1901 (parents William Jackson and May Swanson) and died in Double Bay, N.S.W. 1969. Informant on death certificate was Joan O. Preston. Would appreciate any assistance. Thankyou, Jan.

Hi Jan,

I have not been able to find any birth for a Richard Ernest Jackson in New South Wales around 1901. Do you know when your grandmother married Richard Jackson? If you can give some more information that will help. Thanks

Hi,
Thankyou for your help. Richard married my grandmother - Thelma May Brennan - on 8th February, 1924. I haven't been able to find a Birth Cert. for Richard either; Marriage Cert. states Richard was born at Newcastle, N.S.W. (I thought it may have even been Newcastle in England, but not, apparently). The informant on his Death Cert., Joan O. Preston, is listed as 'friend'. Richard and Thelma lived in the Balmain/Rozelle area of Sydney during their marriage; Thelma died while Richard was away at the war and on his discharge, he went to the Double Bay area. Thanks again for the help. Jan.

Hi Jan,

Have checked Richard's enlistment for WW2, states that he was born 22nd May, 1901 at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Have you looked at http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/recordsearch/index.aspx his record is digital so you can look at what happened during the war. Richards Service No. is NX148164.

I assume you got his parents names from the marriage certificate.

Hello,
Thanks for your help. I have seen Richard's war record on the National Archives and found it very interesting. He was also in the navy before that. I must say I didn't see his date of birth - thanks for that. It's so easy to read things over and over and still not see something! I did find his parents' names on the Marriage Cert., like you thought. Just wish I could locate a birth certificate, and details on his parents - just seem to go round in circles! Thanks for your guidance. Jan.

Jan,

Is there a possibility that he was registered as his father? My grandfather was registered in his fathers name, not sure if his father misunderstood or was drunk!!! My grandfather did not know, until he went to apply for the pension in the 1960's, that he was not who he thought he was!!

Hi,
Hmm...will check that idea out. Since starting my family history a couple of years ago, have discovered so many things, some of which were very unexpected! Thanks!
