Find Ancestors

Can anyone find any information on the early life of this lady? She married Robert Cox (when, where?) and had 3 children - Frank 1861, Harry c1863, Ada 1868 all born in Dartford, Kent. Robert died in 1869 and she married William Hemming in 1873.
I would like to know where she was born and any information about her marriage and where she was before that.

The first census record I can find is 1871 where Elizabeth, Frank, Harry and Ada are living at 6 South St, Dartford.
I don't think this can be the wedding because Robert died in 1869 and anyway, they don't seem to have moved from Dartford after 1861 when Frank was born. Unfortunately he was born in August so cannot appear on the 1861 census.

Maybe their marriage isn't registered as it wasn't compulsory till 1875

I would like this to be the right Elizabeth but I'm not sure. Frank's birth certificate puts her in Dartford on 31/08/1861. This isn't impossible but I would be happier if we could find Robert Cox in the vicinity. He must have been near where she was at this point surely??

Even if they didn't register the marriage they must have met!!

I can see no Elizabeth with a Robert Cox on the 1861 nor a Robert on his own in Dartford

I know they would of have to have met & thats what i normally take into consideration, but you have the advantage by Franks birth..according to the 1871 he was born in 1862

As Julie mentioned, this is clearly young Frank in 1871. I think they have stated his YOB from the fact he would not have aged another year in 1871 and have not countered on the fact he was yet to have a birthday...thus making his YOB a year out..... (which is better than the 1841's which were 5 years out for no reason!)

Both Eliza and James are probably in rooms within the same house....

No Robert.... and Elizabeth is listed as Widow, which i believe is correct.

Had a look at the marriage record for Elizabeth and William HEMMING. It's on the Cityark site-Jpg 125 for Dartford marriages. It lists her father as Francis JOHNSON-occ:Relieving Officer. Have a look at the 1861 in Pocklington for Francis and Sarah(wife) JOHNSON and then at the 1851 for the same family. Pretty sure that's your Elizabeth as Betsy-age 19. (I think she was telling porkies about her age in later years).
So,she fits in nicely with the Elizabeth CASE in Dartford 1871.

1 address on Frank's birth cert is Heath Lane, Dartford - another line of enquiry I feel

2 an excellent idea to consider the William Hemming marriage, I missed that one. What's the Cityark site? You're right that it fits with Robert and Elizabeth Case could be mishearing by the census collector.
