Ancestors of William Johnson dob c 1826

I am looking for any information anyone can add to my tree with regard to my ggggrandather - I keep drawing a blank - His name was William Johnson dob c1826 - he married Hannah Clarkson in Sherburn on 3rd April 1848. I have a very full history of his descendents but his ancestors are a complete mystery. Family stories have suggested that in the dim and distant past he was descended from the Scottish Johnston Clan - I have no proof and I have no idea where this story came from it is probably all fabrication! - any help would be welcome - Anne
