He was my nans dad on my mothers side. He had children, Hilda, Mary, William, Queenie, Edith, Ivy, Arthur, Roy & Reginald.

He married Mary Ann Lawrence in Gravesend, Kent on 17 Apr 1911. However its such a common name & Im now told by a family member that he wasnt from Gravesend, Coventry was mentioned but not definate!

Also trying to trace both his & his wifes ancestors. New to this so really hope someone can help me.

Thanks everyone

Does anyone have free access to a site that can lookup censuses free from an address rather than by name?

Found the marriage certificate on medway city ark that says address at marriage for William was 10 Brewhouse Yard (I believe that will be Gravesend, Kent). Also says father was James William Johnson, a Frame Maker.

If he was living with his family it might give me a lead on other members of his family or where he was born! He was married 17 Apr 1911.

It may be that he was still at this address in 1901!

Thank Jenny x

Dear Jennywrena

Hello

The only website that does check the addresses for each census
up to and including 1901 is

www.findmypast.

You can subscribe or buy credits.

Best wishes

You can use the address as a search term in the 1911 census. You have to include a name (given name or surname), but if there's a match, it will tell you.

Oh, hold on. You want to know in 1901.

Why not just find *him* and see where he was?

I realize you can't be sure you've found him because of the common names, but you could look for those names in 1901 and see whether any you find are at that address.

hmm, in 1911, these are the Johnsons in Gravesend who answer to "brewhouse" for residential place - not to No. 10, though.

JOHNSON SAMUEL 1873 38 Gravesend Kent
JOHNSON MARY 1879 32 Gravesend Kent
JOHNSON ELIZABETH 1906 5 Gravesend Kent
JOHNSON MARY 1901 10 Gravesend Kent
JOHNSON ROSIE 1910 1 Gravesend Kent

If you've accessed the marriage cert info - how old was he when he married? That's a crucial bit of info for searching.

In 1911, these Lawrences were at 10 Brewhouse:

LAWRENCE JAMES 1887 24 Gravesend Kent
LAWRENCE JANE 1854 57 Gravesend Kent

Mary's mother and brother?

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 11 Sep 2009 01:36

So this would be Mary's household in 1901 at 2 Swan Yard, Milton, Kent.:

William Lawrence 47
Jane Lawrence 46
Ben Lawrence 19
James Lawrence 15
Mary Lawrence 11

Do you suppose James was a *bicycle* frame maker??

1891 in Coventry:

James Wm Johnson 29
Mary Eliza Johnson 30
Frank Johnson 6
William Johnson 3
Amy Johnson 2
Rebecca Clarke 69 (Mary's mother)

James's occupation is something like

Filer up Cycle Trade

Actually, Rebecca Clarke was his mother; in 1881:

David Kimberley 70
Thomas Clark 77
Rebecca Clark 56
James W. Johnson 14

and that James had the bad grace to be unemployed.

You were dying for some more Clark/es, weren't you??

A search of the 1911 -- c'mon, you can do it!!! -- for Johnson in Gravesend, born in Coventry, produces:

INSTITUTION JOHNSON WILLIAM 1890 21 Gravesend Kent

That's a bit coincidental. But what institution?

Hi Janeycanuk,
Sorry im bothering you again.

William Johnsons age at marriage was 21, as was Mary Ann Amelia Lawrence his wife!

yes, that is Marys Mother & Brother in 1911 census. Thanks.

that is the family on 1901 census, although father calls himself William not Thomas Christmas (which was his name) although original seems to have been altered!

1891 census for Johnson could be right but Williams age is out, should be 1!. Not sure about bicycle frame maker, never thought of that was thinking picture..... Cant believe there is another Clark(e) to investigate! Rebecca & which child is she mother to? Williams Dad or Mum?

Finally 1911 census matches Williams age but I have no idea what Institute means. Can anyone help on this? Maybe someone has come across it before. Any ideas how I can follow this lead please? He married in this year!

Havnt read all your suggestions yet but will do asap.

Thanks for all your help.

It's not bothering at all -- but if you follow along, you'll pick up tips for searching and might have more fun doing it. I just kind of hate doing the discovering for people if they'd rather do it, and don't like to keep taking things too far back for fear of spoiling their own fun.

You found those Aylesford Carruthers-s or Clark/e-s or whoever they were. ;)

Jenny, The institution on 1911 census is Gravesend Military Barracks, and workhouse. In a previous email didn't you say that William's occupation on his marr. cert. is soldier. Surely, this fits, and I have given you that info. before.

Cheers, June

JaneyCanuck Report 13 Sep 2009 17:16

Well that solves that, June! I would have thought barracks would show as "military", but I didn't have that little bit of crucial info from the marriage certificate ...

Seems to tie up neatly.

Just rechecked & yes did say soldier at time of marriage. So thanks ever so much for that June. Looks like that all fits then.

Thanks again.
