Please can anyone help me as to where I could find the death details of Frank Ernest Johnson. So far no luck searching the county archives. I have a marriage certificate dated 1909 on which Franks age is stated as being 22 (no birth certificate to back this up). If he served in the first World War (and I dont know that he did) and was killed, does anyone know if the death would be registered in the normal archives. He was the son of Charles Johnson and born possibly in Hull or surrounding areas in Yorkshire. Many thanks.

War deaths outside the UK won't show in the GRO index.

http://www.cwgc.org/debt_of_honour.asp?menuid=14

Commonwealth War Graves Commission lists war dead -- but common names beware, the search function is dreadful!

Also, many entries don't have personal information. For instance, this one:

JOHNSON , F E Sapper 41465 13/10/1916 Unknown Royal Engineers United Kingdom V. E. 7. WARLENCOURT BRITISH CEMETERY

Others have full names, ages, and next of kin in the full record.

I don't see a Frank Ernest.

To which woman? Have you searched at FreeBMD for / do you know of children?

And the 1911 census:

But without knowing his wife's name, we can't do either search.

Janey Canuck - many thanks for your help. I don't know if he served in the war but in the absence of any other info it was just a guess. He married Adeline Wagner in 1909 - this is the copy marriage certificate I have managed to get.

Tania - thanks for your help. Yes this looks like the right Frank! So if he was 13 in 1901, the age of 22 on the marriage cert in 1909 would be about right as well.

Crossed in the post -- you're welcome. ;)

Long gap between kids. And the one born 1918 could have been posthumous for Frank, if he was killed in the war.

The FEJ I noted who has no details died in 1916.

It was not unknown for widows (or women whose husbands were at the front, or whose war status was unknown) to have children with someone else and register them as children of the marriage.

Jany Canuck - I see what you mean about the second birth - think I'll try to get a copy of the cert., then try the debt of honour site you mention. Many thanks.
