I would appreciate any information about my extended Johnson family and confirmation of any links back in time. My grandfather Harry Johnson [also Henry and Harold in some documents] died aged 66 in 1945. He must have been born around 1879. However, I cannot locate a birthplace or birth certificate. Harry married Constance Maud Mary Lubbock on 11th May 1907 at the Lambeth Registry Office. He gave his own occupation as Estate Agent's Clerk [later for most of his life he worked as a Stockbroker's Clerk in the City of London]. Harry gave his father's name as Robert Edwin Johnson [occupation Brush Manufacturer]. At the time of his marriage, Harry was living at 120 Stockwell Park, Clapham / Lambeth, SW London. Constance was living at 25 Lugard Road, Peckham, SE London. My grandmother Constance Johnson died on the 27th March 1941. Her address at that time was given on the Death Certificate as 59A Belmont Park, Lewisham, though she appears to have been living for the last period of her life at 10 Bailey Road, Westcott, Dorking. It appears that Harry retired aged 60 and that he and Constance put in place a plan to retire from London to the charming little village of Westcott near Dorking. After Constance died Harry continued to live at Westcott in a cottage near the 'Cricketers' pub (1 Sunnyville). He remarried in 1944 for the last brief period of his life, to a lady named Florence Wood. He died on 19th June 1945 and is buried in Westcott Parish Churchyard next to Constance. It is possible that Harry was drawn to Westcott because it was his sister Alice Smith who was the publican of the Cricketers in the 1940s. It appears that she was living there at that time as a widow with her daughter Daisy. It is possible that there were other Smith children and that there may be as yet undiscovered relatives linked to this part of Surrey. My father Cyril ['Jay'] Johnson was born on 24th December 1909 (Xmas Eve) in London at 61 Brayard Road, Peckham, Camberwell. He was the middle of three sons (no other children), with an elder brother Robert [an Accountant] born 1908 and a younger brother Eric Harry born 1912 [well-known pre and post WW2 as a winner of the Stock Exchange London-Brighton Walk]. Robert has a family history as the preferred name for an elder son. The boys went to St Johns Bowyer School, Clapham. Cyril won a scholarship to attend the Strand School. He subsequently went to Kings College at the University of London where he studied History. In 1931/ 32 he obtained his first appointment as a teacher at the Nantwich and Acton Grammar School (‘NAGS’) in Cheshire. He met my mother Mabel Clarke in Nantwich. Grateful also for any leads or links relating to: Robert William Lilystone Johnson, Basketmaker, born Plaistow about 1820. Wife Catherine bca 1821 [born Catherine Bowen] North Weald, Essex. Children incl: Robert bca 1854, Brushmaker; Alfred bca 1856, Harnessmaker; George bca 1858, Basketmaker; Caroline bca 1862. Robert W.L. Johnson may be my great great grandfather. Also R.W.L. Johnson's elder son Robert [Edwin?] Johnson, Brushmaker / Manufacturer, born Plaistow c1854, married Elizabeth Bossley of Gravesend 4th July 1876. Children incl: Elizabeth bca 1877; Robert J. Johnson bca 1878; Caroline bca 1881;Amy bca 1885; Daisy 1887; Anne 1889; Alice 1891; William 1896. This Robert [or 'Robert Edwin'] may be my great grandfather. However, there is no Harry Johnson linked to his family in the 1881 Census. If there is a link, it is possible that my grandfather Harry Johnson was the twin of Robert J. Johnson.
