I am looking for the family of Lillie Amelia Ferris who married Frederick Alan Johnson in Darlington 1912. They had 2 sons, Thomas Alan Johnson 1913 Hartlepool and Sidney Johnson 1915 Hartlepool. Lillie died 1975 aged 89yrs in North Durham. Lillie was born in Cornwall and we have lost touch with all her family up there in the north of England. Can anyone help please.

Julia Sorry if I appear thick. Still finding my way around the computer!!
I have searched other trees but nothing. I contacted 2 people who I thought was correct for the 2 sons but as there are loads of Johnsons in the area I drew a blank.
Thankyou Julia.

Patricia -- if you have the exact dates of birth for

Thomas Alan Johnson 1913
Sidney Johnson 1915

you could search the death index since 1984 to seen whether they died in that period.

It looks like there's only one Sidney who matches the birth year:

Sidney Johnson
30 May 1915
Mar 1989
aged 73
Bracknell Berkshire

but there are several Thomas Johnsons born 1913.

If one of them did die during that period, the death certificate might tell you something, or you might be able to find a newspaper obituary on microfilm at the public library in the place where he died, which would give family members' names.

Dear Minnie and Katherine B.
Thankyou for your replys.
My Grandfather was Thomas Ephriam Ferris the youngest of the family. All the sisters were sent into service at quite young ages and poor Lillie ended up in the north of the country. I am led to believe she only ever returned to Cornwall once to see her family. I just find it so sad. They were sent away as children really and must have been extremely homesick etc. I have found all the others families and been in touch. Its just Lillie I'm stuck with. It would be lovely to make contact with her family. lt looks like Katherine B may have a lead with the death of a Sidney. I will have alook at the phone book for a few years before that and see what comes up. The only other thing I could do is put a piece in the local paper in that area. Anyone know what the local paper in Bracknell, Berkshire is called?
Thankyou all so much for your help. It's great.

The thing I always suggest, Patricia, is that if you have identified a death, you go looking for a newspaper obituary. Obtaining the death certificate would give you the exact date of death (the info I gave there is just the month it was registered), and might have family info too. An obituary would certainly tell you the names of children, grandchildren, etc.

At least, I keep assuming that you Brits do your obituaries the same way we do over here, and that there would almost certainly be one placed in a paper by family!

So you might want to get the death cert, or maybe contact the reference section of whatever library is local to that place and inquire what paper the death notice might have appeared in, and whether they have archives ... and whether someone can be prevailed upon to search the microfilms for you. ;)

Your Sidney's birth was registered:

Births Sep 1915
Johnson Sidney Ferris Hartlepool 10a 204

so the death record for the person born in May 1915 might not match -- although it's possible that someone born mid-May wasn't registered until July.

However, there were four Sidney Johnson births registered in the April-Jun quarter 1915, and three others in the Jul-Sept quarter, and that death record could equally well be for one of them. I'd order the certificate before I went much farther with it, and also the birth cert for Sidney, to get his exact date of birth. (You didn't say, but I'm assuming you don't have it?)

It is indeed sad to find some of the things that happened to one's ancestors. My father's father was rather uppity, including in his view of the family of his wife, my grandmother. I knew that his father had something to do with the organ at Salisbury Cathedral (I've found that he was a musician and piano tuner), and I've learned that his mother's family were a long line of prosperous butchers. The musician's father was a prosperous cabinetmaker in Canterbury. Then much later I found that the prosperous cabinetmaker's father died in the workhouse in Mere where he'd lived for two decades. And that the workhouse ancestor's grandparents had been expelled from Dorset back to Wiltshire under the Poor Law, with two young children, as burdens on the public purse. How soon some of our recent ancestors (including some of my own snooty for no good reason cousins) forget their humble origins. Sad as it is to learn about them, one has to think they might at least be pleased to know their descendants have survived and had better lives!

Thankyou Katherine B,
I will endevour to do all of those things.
I am a carer for my mum after she had a severe stroke and don't get alot of spare time. I'm afraid my house work tends to suffer when I'm on a mission to find a relative or their family!
I'm sure I will find them in time.
I used to hate history at school but now after learning so much of what went on years ago I am fascinated with it.
The work houses were terrible. Because the people had such big families and couldn't afford to have their parents living with them etc. alot of retired proffessional people had no choice but to go into them. so so sad. As you mentioned I think they would be glad to know that things are no longer like that and their descendents are better off today.
I too have snooty people in my tree!!! There for the grace of God go I, is a good grounder.
Thankyou for your time,
Cheers for now,
Patricia

To all,
It took me ages to find this page. Got completely lost!!!
I have sent for the birth cert. and found that Sidney did die in Bracknell, Berkshire 1989 age 73. I sent for his death cert. and someone callled John Potter registered his death and it says he is his nephew. Cant find a marriage for Sidney so have been trying to find out if Thomas married someone called Potter but no luck so far.
Unless Thomas moved out of the Country I think he is still alive. He would be 95 this year. I have put a piece in the Northern echo paper and in the Bracknell news but nothing yet.
Just keep searching. It would be so nice if I could find Thomas if he is still alive.
Cheers for now,
Patricia
