Find Ancestors

Trying to find James William Johnston in Portsmouth around the turn of the century. 1899
I have an address as 64 Hartford Street Landport.
But cant find on census.
I have this:
Name James Johnston Age 23 Estimated Year of Birth 1838 Relationship to Head of Household SON Occupation PLAISTERER Birth Place Portsmouth Birth County HAMPSHIRE Address 5 Rutland Street District Landport, Portsea Island Administrative County Hampshire.
But cant find him on any census..I have a couple of close ones...but the details dont match.

Also I believe its spelt Hertford not Hartford. And he was married to Elizabeth Emma Johnston( though I looked for her..I could only find an Emma Elizabeth..only once..and wasnt her..well area wrong.

Info via birth cert..not for this person...his daughter.
Daisy Lilian born 1899.

I have a suspicion they married in 1878.
Seem odd to have a kid 20 years after you marry.
Im trying to find the household..family..so as to find siblings and possible parents.....and....to possibly find out if he came from Scotland. I cant find the family.

I dont recall where I got he rest of the info...Im trying to confirm if this is him..and who else was in the family. There are a number of people with the same name..but there are discrepences...There is another James...same name, same area, but the birth dates dont add up!

born 1836 35y old, and this one born 1838 23y olds

How can that be?....I have a feeling the one born in 1836 should read 1807..as this maybe his father!..but date of birth reads 1836.

IF!.... I can find the this chap( the one the thread is about) I might be able to work out who this other guy is. And if hes relevant...father..etc.

Mind you..wifes name not right...looking for an Elizabeth Emma.
I think i saw a Emma Elizabeth..hence more confusion!

Birth place for Daisy is 64 Hartford Street Landport,
Yet the info i have says.
5 Rutland Street District Landport

By the way i think it is spelt with an e not and a for Hert.

Im thinking they may have had 2 sets on twins!
As all i can find is that they married( possibly) 20 yrs before Daisy was born!
And in that time has 2 sets of twins and may be other kids to boot!

James William Johnston is Daisy's dad
Emma Elizabeth Hodges is her mother.
She was born in 1899 (Daisy)
64 Hartford Street Landport.

The street should be spelt Hertford not Hartford, they spelt it wrong.
But may appear as Hartford (there was a Hertford St)


Anyone able to fill in the blanks would be great! :)

Strange name of mother given as Bessie..his wifes name was Elizabeth Emma!

Unfortunately there appears to have been a number of James Johnstons's coming to Hampshire, Portsmouth around that time...

Tricky to work out whos who..ect..
hence Im havign trouble pinpointing the exact famliy

One of the major falling points is 2 James Johnstons.
But the dates for births dont add up!

How can that be?..only reason I can thingk of is the date for the 1836 is incorrect..and should be 1807..and so possibly the otehrs father..

Bessie is a common nick name for Elizabeth.

The confusions with a number of other James Johnston's is messing things up..lol..

Yes thats the marriage I found and believe is correct..its just that they didnt have daughter Daisy till 1899!....20 years after marrying!

They must have been getting on!

Confusion with others of same name in the area?..as I pointed out.

The surname has many spelling...the one im concerned with is Johnston

If you find a family with a daughter named Daisy Lilian born 1899..thats them..but thats 20years after they married.!

Was she born at 64 Hertford Street?

If so the 1901 census posted is the correct one....they must have called her Nellie as a petname.

Well had a look.....doesn't appear to be a birth in England in 1858 to corrispond with his suspected birth...so...could be scottish! :)
