My Great Great Grandfather Henry Jones marries my Great Great Grandmother Ann Maria Roberts in Wolstanton in the month of September 1870. I know who her father was but who was Henry's? Any help would be greatly recieved.

This one may not be as simple as buying the Marriage Certificate!The key to this one is of course the Ann Jones listed in the 1871 Census as Henry's Mother,and born in Tunstall in c 1830.Henry is listed in most of the Census years as born in Tunstall in c 1849.The surprise of all this is that I found an Ann Jones born in Tunstall in c 1829 in the 1861 Census,and married to a Thomas Jones listed as born in Burslem in c 1828.Listed as a son with the Family is a Henry Lawton born in c 1849 in Tunstall.I looked then for a Henry Lawton born in Tunstall in c 1849,and found him staying at the Houshold of a Baskerville Family with an Ann Lawton listed as unmarried and born in Tunstall in c 1830.I also found on Staffordshire BMD the Marriage in 1853 at Wolstanton St Margaret of a Thomas Jones and an Anne Lawton.

The Baskervilles are Lodgers.



So it looks as if Henry was the illegitimate son of Ann Lawton, that she then married Thomas Jones, and Henry eventually assumed the name of Jones.


You should try to get Henry and Ann Maria's marriage certificate .... it will cost £7 from www.gro.gov.uk.
