Rhiwlas-based family in the 1870s

Denbighshire clanswoman Report 24 Jul 2008 22:07

I am trying to find any records of my grandmother Annie Rose Jones born 1878 and her brothers Charles, Sam, Lloyd, Daffyd/David and Robert.
Annie married Edward Allen Hughes in 1910 and I have the records from then on but nothing before. Their marriage certificate (Llansillin) indicates that her father was Thomas Jones from Oswestry. I don't have a dob for him or name of his wife.
Rhiwlas is the one in Denbighshire near Llansillin.
I know that Charles married a schoolteacher and lived in Llanarmon, Lloyd was a bachelor, Sam married Polly and had children and Daffyd had a son, Richard.
Any help pinning down some dates of birth, marriages or deaths for these chaps?

Hi Shirley,

What was the father Thomas's occupation on Annie's marriage certificate. Was he still alive when she married (does it say deceased).

Sam and Charles are very unusual Welsh names, is there any chance that there could be a parent from England??

We cannot say at the moment that the children were born in Wales, unless you can tell us differently Shirley??

Denise is right that Samuel married Polly - I didn't have a date or surname before so this is real progress thanks!

Annie Rose was not born in Ireland (sorry Paula!), although there might be a remote chance that she was born on the Welsh/English border as Oswestry is the nearest big town and her father certainly lived there for some of his life. I believe he was still alive at the time of her marriage but don't know his job.
Annie second name is definitely Rose and her dob is 1878 Nov.
Thanks so much for the assistance.

Hi Shirley,

You mention Rhiwlas, where does this come into play.

Do you have Annie Rose's marriage certificate? If you don't we wont be able to go any further until you do, it should tell us whether her father was alive and his occupation. Should also tell us where Annie was living when she married.

Really struggling to find them on any census. Any other info you have would be great.

No I don't think the ones in Oswestry can be the ones - although it is a strange co-incidence that her son Peter owned a house in Middleton Road, Oswestry. To my knowledge there were no female siblings.
I don't have a marriage certificate - is this something I can send off for? There was something on the site about it but the message doesn't appear when I search and open records any longer.
As to where Rhiwlas fits in - this small village is where these Joneses are said to have been born and lived - it is between Llanarmon D C and Llansillin. The information comes from my mother, who ought to know! However it is puzzling that they don't appear anywhere on the censuses.

Hi Shirley,

Think you're going to have to buy the marriage certificate, to help us get further. You can buy online for £7.00 at The General Register. the info below tells you; Year and Quarter, Name, District, Volume and Page. Also tick you know the district/region or they'll charge you £27.00.

Marriages Dec 1910 (>99%)
Hughes Edward A Oswestry 6a 1463
Jones Annie R Oswestry 6a 1463

Lots of suprising things can turn up once you have the certificate, so it's definately worth buying it.

Cheers, Dee

Annie Rose and Edward had 8 children - my Mum and aunts and uncles - all of whom I have known and have full details on. Peter is one of them. Only three are still alive and none know the names of their grandparents!
I shall buy the certificate as it would be lovely to have it anyway. If it is the same as the parish record I could only glean the witnesses (a cousin and a daughter of Edward's from his first marriage) and the name of Annie's father and his address in Oswestry.
I can see that a post has been deleted from this thread - did I do something to offend someone do you think?
They had suggested an Irish connection which was incorrect but I hope I haven't upset them by rejecting that idea.
I am very grateful for all ideas and have been amazed by the amount of effort you have put in.

Hi Shirley,

Been thinking about this one, Annie would have been 32 when she married and to have 10 children she would have been fairly old, Samuel married in 1908, presuming we work off a similar date of birth he would have been around 30. Could your dates be wrong??

I also came across this;

1891 Wales Census
about Samuel Jones
Name: Samuel Jones
Age: 2
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1889
Relation: Son
Father's Name: Thomas
Mother's Name: Elizabeth
Gender: Male
Where born: Danbych, Gewfron

Ecclesiastical parish: St John Pontfadog

Country: Wales

Edward Jones 24 ****
Elizabeth Jones 36
Elizabeth Jones 75 (Thomas's mother)
Mary Jones 22 ****
Robert Jones 5
Samuel Jones 2
Thomas Jones 50
William Jones 10

The elder Elizabeth is Thomas's mother, the younger Elizabeth was his wife, she is stated as the mother to the children, there is no way she could be Mary and Edwards true mother, ummm food for thought!!!!

Could Annie's father married twice and the siblings you listed have been from that marriage??

Can I ask how old the youngest child of Annies is/was, if we work from this it could give us a different date of birth for Annie.

I feel 99.9% sure this is the family we've been looking for, do the other unmentioned siblings mean anything to your aunts and uncles??? Bare in mind Henry would have been old enough to go to War and not every child survived through their young years.

I now have some updated information which puts the Jones family in order. It transpires that Annie Rose was the eldest, then Sam, Dafydd, Charles, Robert and Lloyd. I am leaning towards 1880 as the dob for Annie but having refreshed searches based on a logical birth pattern I still can't make any of the records match so that I am 100 per cent confident. I shall add more once the certificate arrives.

I know this began over two years ago but to bring some closure to those who helped I can now tell you it is all sorted and much of the information posted was spot on. Thomas did indeed marry twice. It turns out he had several children with first wife Mary, then took up with Elizabeth who already had Annie and Dafydd from another relationship.
Couldn't have done it without you, thanks.
