I am trying to find the birth of John Elias Jones. I am told he was born in 1873 in Holywell, N. Wales and was brought to Liverpool when he was about 3 months old. I have his marriage and death certificates. His father's name is John Jones but mother's name unknown. I've gone through FindmyPast and can only find one John Elias born Dec qtr 1872, parents John and Sarah. John and Sarah seem to be still in Wales in 1881/1891 census so I don't think this is correct birth. I can't find him in 1881 census and the only one I can find in 1891 census is as a visitor (cousin) to a Hugh and Elizabeth Roberts. |

Thanks Helen. I did find him in the 1901 census but I can't find him in the 1881 census. |

What is Wales bmd - is it the same as freebmd, if so I've tried that and I couldn't find him. I sent for a certificate for a John Elias Jones born in Dec qtr 1872 which gave parents as John and Sarah. Checking the various censuses John and Sarah were still in Wales after 1873 so it probably wasn't the correct one. Does anyone know if school records of pupils were kept back then because he must've gone to school in Liverpool. |

There's two places you can buy a BMD cert - from the GRO, or from the local RO that registered the event in the first place, and holds the original registration. FreeBMD transcribes the GRO index, but some local RO indices are online too. They don't usually contain identical info, since their registers aren't organized in the same way. |

Thanks for all your help. I'll try the bmd sites and see what I can find. This really is like looking for a needle in a haystack!! |
