Maree Report 6 Sep 2010 13:06

Hi All
I am trying to find my Julia Maria Jones in the 1841 and 1851 census. Julia was born in 1837 to Thomas and Sarah. She had a sister Clara who sailed with her to Australia as nursemaids in 1853 aboard the "Java". At the time of sailing their native place was given as Blackfriars head, London. they also had an uncle William already living in Sydney and working as a jeweller. Hope someone can help thank you

I know what you mean but I have no way of knowing if this is my Julia or not. It certainly fits the bill, i wonder if Clara her sister was born in the same area?

Where did you get the 1837 date from Maree?

Maree

Maree Report 6 Sep 2010 13:38

The family in the 1841 census definately sounds like the right one as Clara is lated on the shipping as being born in 1839. On Julia's death certificate when she dies age 32 ?? in 1868 but he husband must have had the information wrong
Thank you once again

I have found a Clara in 1851 working as assistant lace maker though the age is a year or two out, .... and several possible Julia's one as a servant...I am wondering if they were orphaned and that is why they both left uk in 1853?

I don't know, maybe that is why they are so elusive and with such a common surname.

The baptism for Julia gives the father's occupation as Porter, that is the same on the 1841..

**Ann** Report 6 Sep 2010 14:06

On board the Java in 1853 Julia is listed as aged 21 Years. The Julia we found in 1841 age is correct.
