Hi, I'd be really grateful if anybody had any tips on how to reslove the following problem!!-

My grandfather, Owen John Jones was born in Llannerch y medd, Anglesey workhouse on 26 Jan, 1915. His birth certificate states that his mothers name is Catherine Jane Jones, (no mention of a father) and according to the workhouse records, she was born in 1887, but it doesn't state where. She entered the workhouse with another son, David Jones who was born in 1913 in Menai Bridge, Anglesey.
Five months after giving birth, she leaves the workhouse with the two boys, and I have no trace of her thereafter.

My grandfather was raised and given another surname by another family, which he always thought were his birth family, so I have no idea how or why he came to be informally adopted, or what happend to his birth mother or brother.

When searching through the 1911 census for Catherine Jane Jones, I obviously have 100's of results, and no real way of narrowing them down!!

Does anybody have any tips on how to proceed, or somebody may have encountered a similar predicament?!

I would be very grateful for any advice on how to proceed!!

Many thanks for your time

Rhian.

Hi Rhian,You could look for a marriage for Catherine Jane Jones in the area. Then look for a death ,and see if the birth date more or less matches.

If she never married, or married a Jones you have your work cut out with choices.
