I'm trying to find the birth of John Elias Jones. According to my mother-in-law he was born in Holywell in 1873 and was brought to Liverpool at about 3 months old. I can find him in the 1891 and 1901 censuses and have his marriage and death certs, but I can't find him in the 1881 census. I've also had no luck getting his birth cert. His father's name was John and he was a Collier. When John Elias married in 1897 his father was shown as deceased. It's like looking for a needle in a haystack!

Hi
I have the birth cert. for 1872 John Elias Jones but have no way of knowing if this is the right one. I can't find him at all in the 1881 census and if my mother-in-law is correct with when he came to Liverpool then he should be in the 1881 England census. The 1891 census shows him visiting a Hugh Roberts family, shown as a cousin. I know there's a connection here but I haven't found it as yet.

Yvonne,

I have trawled the wales BMD and like Maureen am of the opinion that the 1872 may be your man. I noticed that the birth was registerd in Flint.

Did you see the entry in the 1881 census for John Jones born Flint Holywell Wales. He is in the Blue Coat School, School Lane Liverpool aged 11 slightly out with age but that is not at all unusual.....seems more than a coincidence in relation to your nans story..........worth a look

Thanks Ann
I'll check that out. I'm away from home and my records until end of March.
My mother-in-law says he was brought to Liverpool at about the age of 3 months and they lived with 'somebody' in the Cressington Park area. She didn't know if this somebody was family or not.
The 1891 census entry is a definite possibility and I'm trying to follow up on that too. Wish I had my records here so I could give you the thread.

Hi Yvonne,

I noticed another family in Flint (Jones) living at Queens Street a gaggle of kids, but both parents born Liverpool/Birkenhead....could be a conection also.
There are too many Jonses in Wales! The census entry was 1881 not 91. have done quite a bit of digging for records in this area many years ago with my own family. I lived in Flint and my mother was born there. Liverpool record office have boys application books and admission records the latter 1743/1962 for the Bluecoat school looking throgh the notes thay may give names of guardian and parent and sometimes addresses.
