I am trying to find information on my Grandfather, Robert Thomas Edmund Jones. I have his marriage certificate of 1892 and he is on the 1901 Census.
I know he was a butcher in Widnes, Lancashire and went bankrupt in 1904. Before 1892 he does not seem to exist, his marriage certificate shows he was born in 1868 as he was 24 years old. On the 1901 census it says he was born in Everton, Liverpool. Befrore 1892 he is a mystery man, can anyone help ?

From the marriage certificate, what was his father's name. If it was also Robert, there is a possibility on the 1871 census.

His wife was Mary Elizabeth Francis born in Widnes in 1874, I have her birth certificate. My Grandfather R.T.E. Jones had 3 butchers shops in Widnes in his wife's name and later a buthchers and greengrocers at Penketh Nr Warrington. He died in 1936 aged 68 I have his death certificate so it does look as though he was born in 1868. You would think with a name like Thomas Robert Edmund Jones he would be somewhere before 1892. I found his bankruptcy 1904 in the records at Kew.

From the marriage certificate R.T.E.'s father is given as Michael Jones a commission agent On the marriage cert R.T.E. 1892 gives his address as 26 Gladstone Street, Widnes but he is not living there on the 1891 census. However there is a widow living there with a son who is a butchers apprentice so RTE may have been lodging there but not put down on the census.

I guess you have trawled the Welsh census for him?

Yes, I have looked at all the Welsh census returns, There are countless Robert Joneses but nothing I can tie down to Robert Thomas Edmund. I think I may have to visit the Liverpool archives and view the baptism records from the Everton churches in the hope that he may be there somewhere. He may have been Welsh as he had red hair as I do and and my daughter and grandchildren.
