DavidM_UK Report 5 Dec 2010 17:29

I have the following family in the 1871 census:

William King head m 32 Labourer Chelsea
Ellen King wife m 31 Leyton, Essex
Ellen King dau s 11 Scholar Mile End, Middlesex
Marion King dau s 9 Scholar Mile End, Middlesex
Annie King dau s 6 Scholar St Katherine Cree (Heneage Lane)
George King son s 3 St Katherine Cree (Heneage Lane)
James King son s 1 St Katherine Cree (Heneage Lane)

living at 6 Heneage Lane, St Katherine Cree, Aldgate, London
(Source Citation: Class: RG10; Piece: 436; Folio: 15; Page: 25)

I have christening index entries for Ellen, Marion, Annie, and James (via Family Search Beta), all showing parents William and Ellen, with christening at St Mary Whitechapel, Stepney.

I have the marriage cert for William King and Ellen (Squire - born Leytonstone, Essex) in 1859 in Shoreditch.

However I can't find any trace of this family (ie William, Ellen and daughter Ellen) in the 1861 census, despite many hours of searching.

If anyone can find something I would be really grateful!

Paul Report 5 Dec 2010 17:37

I had a Similar problem when trying to trace one of my family called "Fell" they were down as" Fill" -took me ages I had to find them on the census by the address that was on a birth cert in the end using ancestry. -Sometimes the name may well be transcribed wrongly, even a simple name
good luck

Thanks for the replies.

Paul - I had tried searching on address, no luck, and had even tried searching just using the peoples christian names in various combinations, with no surname specified, but no results that looked promising. One day maybe I'll stumble on something that will turn up a result!

Marie - I had seen this entry, and bookmarked it, although there are discrepancies against what I know of "my" family, having also now found them in the 1891 and 1901 census (ages/dob, place of birth, Williams occupation don't feel right). I will try and find the above people in later census to maybe prove that it is a different family.

Thanks again.

Catherine,

Thanks for this. I have her baptism from Family Search Beta, but it didn't have the address or William's occupation.

It's partly the fact that the family seems to be in Whitechapel/Stepney at the time of the baptism (1860) that I discounted the King family living in Brentwood in the 1861 census (ref Marie's post above). I also have christenings for later children in 1862 and 1864, still at St Mary Whitechapel.

Regards, David.

Have now found the Essex King family (ref Marie's post above) in the 1871 census, still living in Essex, so confirmed it's not my King family (St Katherine Cree, Aldgate).
