My name is Joyce Stephenson nee King. I am interested to find out if any household records exsist regarding the staff employed during 1886 and 1890. The house in question was the home of Adam Leigh and his family on Lea Road, Preston. He was the owner of one of the very many cotton mills in Preston - namely Leighs Mill, known generally as Old Leighs Mill. I understand that my Great Grandmother Hannah worked at the house as a cook but I don't know whether she went under the name of Tweddle or King. She married Joseph King, station master at Lea in 1894. I am also keen to trace the whereabouts of any family that exsists of the grandson of the above mentioned Joseph King - also named Joseph King. He was born at Lytham on 3.3.1890. the only details I have of this one is that he attended the 1932 Centenery celebrations of the Temperence Society and was living in Walton le dale. The two Joseph's mentioned above are descendants of the John King who was the first man in England to sign the Total Abstenance Pledge with his friend Joseph Livesey in 1832. He was said to have had five wives and children to each one. So far I have only found wife no.4 called Henrietta which is the line I am from, and wife no.5 called Mary Ann. Any help at all will be gratefully received. Thank you. |
