trying to find any info on samuel leach c1900, ? from an orphanage (possibly hoylake or west derby liverpool) but may have had family living ? uncle sid, worked as a marine fireman lived at some time in southhampton

First seems more likely if he was in an orphange as mother was noted as widow so may have been obliged to put him in care.

Looking at the names, (children Catherine and Samuel), and being with the knowles family in 1901, I would put this marriage record with the first 1901 census record:-

Marriages Mar 1891
Knowles Catherine Liverpool 8b 16
Leach Samuel Liverpool 8b 16

Possible death for Samuel:-
Deaths Jun 1900 (>99%)
Leach Samuel 28 Liverpool 8b 17
