I am trying to find my Great Grandfather Albert Lee. I know that he married Ellen Swan in Harefield, Middlesex (Uxbridge district) on 27th December 1902, according to the marriage certificate he was aged 21, making him born c1881. His parents were Samuel Lee (1839) and Louisa Lake (1841). I cannot find where he was born, his birth date or siblings. I know that he died in 1943 in the Amersham district. Can anyone help please ? Regards Steve

Sarah is noted as housekeeper and the children are all noted as Samuel's. I think she was more than a step daughter and housekeeper!!!

Hi Lew, Don`t think this is him as both Samuel Lee and his son Albert Lee were bricklayers

Steve, I think the one that "Still Looking" has given you is not the right one, but I think the ones I have found are correct, as Samuel Lee I have found is a bricklayer in all the census.
What I think has happened is that Louisa entered the marriage bringing Sarah with her. Louisa then died (Samuel is noted as a widow). Samuel then started having children with Sarah.

Hi Lew, Yes the one still looking is not the right one. I have got Samuel Lee and Louisa Lakes marriage certificate which states that Samuel Lee was a widower aged 23 when they married. I have not been able to find death records for Louisa Lake/Lee

You know, if Samuel started having an affair with Louisa's daughter Sarah, Louisa might just have taken off

Hi Lew, That may well be the case. If I can find Sarahs birth details GRO number, I would obtain her birth certificate to find out who her parents were.

Baby Sarah is staying with her grandparents, but is noted as their daughter! My guess is that Sarah was born out of wedlock

I had just posted the folllowing to ancestry when I found this thread. I offer it here for comment and reaction. All records are fully sourced at my ancestry tree (Username dylbonner)
Samuel Lee and Sarah Lake On the death of his first wife Ellen (nee Brackley), Samuel promptly married Louisa Lake of Beaconsfield who came with a 12 year old illegitimate daughter Sarah (who had heretofore been brought up as her grandparents 'daughter'). Within three years Samuel had fathered a child with the fifteen year old Sarah (Georgiana Lee Lake), and by 1871 Louisa had left him and was working in London as an 'unmarried' servant. Samuel and Sarah spent the rest of their lives together, moving to Chalfont St Peter and produciong another 6 children.
Unpleasant though this story may be I offer it as the only reasonable explanation of the following historical records.
In 1871 Louisa Lake is living with her new husband Samuel Lee and their 12 year old 'daughter' Sarah 'Lee'. Since they had only been married for 7 years, Sarah was clearly not Samuel's child (he had had no children with his previous wife) and we must assume then that she was Louisa's.
Ten years earlier in 1861 Louisa was working as a servant in London, but her parents were bringing up a 2 year old 'daughter' Sarah in Beaconsfield. Sarah had been registered in Jun Q 1859 in Amersham RD (3a/356). Any doubt that this was actually Louisa's illegitimate child is dispelled by the IGI parish baptism record (Beaconsfield Batch C041682) which shows Louisa as mother and no listed father. Louisa was just 17 when she bore Sarah.
Sarah was initially brought up as her grandparents' child (a very common practice). Apparently she was later 'accepted' by her new stepfather as a daughter and later apparently as something more.
Louisa and Samuel married in 1864 and separated between 1871 and 1881. After this Louisa worked in London as an 'unmarried' servant, where she seems to have died in 1896.
In 1881 Samuel is living in Amersham with his 22 year old 'daughter' Sarah Lake (reverting to her original name) and two children named: Georgiana Lee Lake (b1874) and Albert John[!] Lake (b1880).
In 1891 Sarah Lake is living in Vicarage Lane Chalfont St Peter with her children Albert Lee Lake (b Amersham 1878), Rose Lee Lake (b Amersham 1886) and Sidney Lee Lake (b Amersham 1888).
In 1901 Samuel is in Chalfont St Peter with his single 'housekeeper' Sarah Lake and his children Rose L Lake (b Amersham 1887), Sidney L Lake (b Amersham 1888), Daisy L Lake (b Chalfont St Peter 1893), George L Lake (b Chalfont St Peter 1895) and Roland L Lake (b Chalfont St Peter 1899).
The surname Lake and the middle name Lee certainly suggests that these were the children of Samuel and his step-daughter Sarah. If the oldest, Georgi[a]na, had actually been Louisa's child then she would surely have been named Georgiana Lee and there's no good reason to name her Georgiana Lee 'Lake'. Again the IGI provides the final confirmation (Amersham Batch C013266) showing Georgina[sic] Lee Lake as daughter of Sarah Lake - no father listed. It seems Georgiana was born when Sarah was only 15 (but then her mother was only 17 when she had Sarah). Having established that Georgiana was the daughter of Sarah and Samuel then we have no reason to daoubt that all the later children were theirs. This would make a very good reason for Louisa to have left Sam only to live out her life as a servant in London and for Samuel to be very coy about his relationship with his stepdaughter (listing her variously as daughter and housekeeper).

Hello Dyl, you have responded to a thread which is four years old and it is unlikely Steven is still looking for replies.
You can try clicking on his name and sending your message that way. If he still has the same email address, he will be notified.
If you are looking for connections on this site, the best thing to do is to put the names you are researching into the Search Trees box (above in the dark green bar). This will show you if anyone else is researching the same family. If you find a connection, you can contact the tree owner.
Regards. Cx.
