Nellie was my husband's nan and she was born in Cannock Staffs in/or around 1905. She married chap called Leonard Shorter and they went on to have a son Ivor Lewis Shorter. Nellie was one of about 9 children and was a great pianist. When alive she would recall times when she played in the music halls when the silent movies played. I am trying to find out about her parents and siblings but have very little to go on. I know that Ivor was born in Chester in 1929 and went on to marry Margaret Mary Townshend in Weymouth, Dorset in about 1955. |

Your best chance of finding accurate details is to buy the marriage cert.........it will have her full given name, her age, and the name and occupation of her father. |

Sorry for doubling up but still quite new to this. I don't have any info on her other than she came from a very large family, the in-laws are not keen on family trees and are not interested so I have to struggle on and hope I get help from nice peope - like you lot. She never stayed in one place long and I can remember father-in law saying she would leave him with relatives for long periods while she went to Ireland to play the piano in the music halls. |

A bit more info, not a lotm, Nellies father was a miner in Cannock and he bought her a piano when she was a young girl and one of his mates in the mines taught her the piano. She went on to play in music halls all around the country. She met her husband Leonard at that time as he was a bird impersonator and stage manager. They worked together in Weymouth at the start of the second world war when this entertainment stopped. They spent the rest of their lives on Portland where they were landlords for 25 years of the Grove Inn and the Mermaid Inn. |
