John Lewis and Margaret Evans

Penny Report 9 May 2009 21:50

I would be grateful for any help in finding out about my great-grandparents. My grandfather Ernest Evans Lewis was born in December 1908 in the district of Bedwelty, county of Monmouth. His mother is named as Margaret Lewis formerly Evans and father is John Lewis. Apparently she died aged about 21 during or just after childbirth. I have used a free site to help with putting the pieces together, but have had no luck. I cannot find a death record for her or for a marriage between John Lewis and Margaret Evans. I do not even know where they were married. I am presuming they were married after at least 1903 if she was 21 when she died.

Is anyone able to help or to point me in the right directions?

Thanks

Ricochet

Ricochet Report 9 May 2009 22:01

What was John's occupation?

BTW....if you wait a few weeks, you will be able to access 1911 census for Wales........I believe that they hope to release it in June/July

He was a coal miner

Was your grandfather an only child or did he have older or younger siblings/

Just because family stories put her age at 21 at the time of dying do keep an open mind that she could have been older

And as there is no marrige for them in the region and right time scale for her to be 21 in about 1908 if that is when she died, then this death could be a possibility

Deaths Dec 1908 (>99%)
Lewis Margaret 36 Bedwellty 11a 62

And as Ricochet says,1911 census for wales would be a big help to find out more.

I am waiting for it too to tie up some loose ends

Hi Viv

He was on only child as far as I am aware. Apparently he was looked after by his aunt after his mother died so I don't know what happened to his father. Don't even know if it was a maternal or paternal aunt.

I saw there was a death of a 36 year old and wondered if it was her but without a marriage record I have no idea if she was older than I have been told.

Using the MMN as part of the child's name was often an indicator of a pre-marital birth...........(my brother in law was an example of the process)

So...............I wonder........

Hi Ricochet

That is a possibility but I was told she died during or after childbirth (Dec 1908).

I think with a lack of facts I will be sending everyone round in circles!! Is there any way I can find out facts in other ways.

I went to Nantygo, where my grandfather was born, and a resident there said they would look around the graveyard for a grave of Margaret Lewis, but once I had got home he told me he had family committments and abandoned the plan.

Hi Ricochet

If I have been given the wrong facts, the dates you have given me could be a possibility.

I think you may have to wait for the 1911 census, not long now, frustrating I know .
You could always send for that death cert for elimination purposes of course.
not been much help really,sorry.

Thanks for you help Viv. It seems I am not going to get very far with this. I guess that's the trouble when relying on hearsay.

I can't even find the marriage record for Ernest and my grandmother or a death record for Ernest because, again, all the facts are based on hearsay.

Thanks again for your help. It was kind of you to look information up for me. It could be that she didn't die in childbirth and lived to the age of 36. I might be able to find Ernest on the 1911 census like you and Ricochet said - here's hoping.

What was your grandmothers name and when was the oldest child of theirs born.

That death for margaret is in the right place and time for her dying just after/during the birth of ernest.

My grandmother was called Glenys Rosser Simon. I am not sure where they were married but their eldest son was born in September 1938.

I am thinking the same as you regarding the death of Margaret. It does tie in with Ernest's birth so it is quite possibly the same person. Thanks.

It hasnt been transcribed yet on freebmd but from ancestry after searching the quarters

So at least I have been SOME help tonight for you.
Send off for that death to eliminate it if nothing else,I would.
I sent for 7 death certs to find my illegitimate grans father,so one is just a drop in the ocean really.
Then come back here and tell us what it says!

Ernest died about 1941/42. I think he went back to Wales to die. If you can find out when/where he died and I get the death certificate it might give me more clues, say if a relative registered the death.

Thanks

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 9 May 2009 23:58

I cant see him in 1941/42
I will search a bit further afield tomorrow when my eyes are rested.
Check back here tomorrow evening to see if I have found him or not.
Or maybe someone else may have done in the meantime

Thank you so much for your help. I must find the time to send off for the death certificate. Will take your advice and send off for the other certificate too and will let you know. You've been a great help and I really appreciate it. Thanks.
