Hello there,
I am looking for the birth of Elizabeth Lewis. I am hoping someone can help me as I've been looking for a long time.
I've sent for several certificates and they've all came back wrong. Her parents are John Lewis and Jane Smith. Elizabeth was born in Chelsea barracks, according to the census. The certificates I've sent for are 1866 North-West London. 1869 Chelsea North-West. 1870 Kensington Town. All these are not the certificate that I am looking for - they're either Charles, William or Sarah.
I am having great difficulty trying to find this birth. According to her marriage certificate she is 27 years old in 1893 and married James Orton in Middlesbrough. This would make her born in 1866, but I am unable to trace this birth.
Is there anyone that can help me to look for Elizabeth Lewis, born 1866 to John and Jane, Chelsea Barracks in London.
It is possible that this was a military birth which I don't know how to go about. I've been trying all this year and still can't find her.
I'm hoping there's someone out there that can help me find her.
Many thanks, Jean

Found her Elizabeth Lewis on 1901 and 1911 censuses in Middlesbrough.
She is definitely not this one:
"Births Dec 1869
Lewis Elizabeth Chelsea 1a 244"
There are several others, but they're not the ones.
Thanks for your fast reply.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
It looks to me that Jane and John got married in 1866 and I think she was possibly pregnant with Elizabeth at the time.
Yours, Jean

If you do not have her birth cert, where did you get her mother's maiden name from?

I got her mother's maiden name when I found an uncle. His father is my grandfather and he told me that his grandmother was Elizabeth Lewis - that's how I found John and Jane. John was in the Scot's Fusiliers and was born in Carmarthen. Jane was born in Lincolnshire, Shrewsbury.

I have looked at London baptisms Elizabeth Dane Lewis Baptism Dec 1869 John Lewis, Jane Lewis St Mark, Notting Hill Kensington and Chelsea This is not the one that you want.
Are you aware that there was no penalty for not registering a birth until August 1875(I think)

I also found that Jane Lewis died in 1898 in Atcham, aged 73. On the certificate there is a Thomas Lewis son but don't know when he was born. Is there any chance anyone can find anything on him, too? I've got a feeling he's possibly born in London too.

If the death you found in 1898 is your Jane, she was ten years older than given age in 1871 and would have been in her late 40s when Elizabeth was born - not impossible but a bit late for a first child. Do you have John and Jane's marriage cert? If so, what is her age on that?

Hi everyone,
Potty, the last one you sent me about 1881 seems a bit strange and I can't figure it out because in 1881, John Lewis is in Carmarthen, living with an Evans family and is down as a Chelsea pensioner and yet you've got Jane in 1881 living with a family in Westminster, but John died in 1892 and Jane is present at his death and in 1898 when Jane died, she's got a son called Thomas present as death, but I haven't found any evidence of Elizabeth or Thomas on any of the census. Is there any way of finding out anything on both of these children?
I really appreciate all the help you all gave so far because this is a real mystery to me.
Yours, Jean

Hi,
Sorry I am late in replying, but I had to check all the paperwork. John and Jane's marriage was in 1866 in upper-Chelsea, Middlesex. It says John Lewis age full, bachelor, profession army and his father's name is John Lewis and he is a plasterer. It says Jane Smith age full, widow, upper-Chelsea, father Thomas Drury, servant.
Thanks, Jean
