Hi Please can you help. I am trying to narrow down my hunt for G/G Grandfather Richard Martin, born c. 1817 in Middlesex. I went to the London Archives yesterday and have narrowed the search down to two - Richard Joseph Martin born 17/10/1817 to Richard and Sarah Martin baptised at Finsbury St Luke or
Richard Martin b 14/7/1817 to Richard and Ann baptised at St Dunstans Stepney.
I have Richard Jnr's marriage printout to Eleanor Knibb in 1856 stating his fathers name was also Richard and that he was a Distiller. Parish records for option 1 above show Dad to be a Bookseller but I dont see that the two could be mis-interpreted. Parish records for no 2 show Dad is a Mariner - definitely no misreading the two there.
Where an how do I go about finding out which is the right one?

Is the c1817 birth date taken from census records or maybe his marriage certificate?

He might have been born in 1816 for instance, were there any possibilities for other years? 1817 could be too narrow a date to be looking at ..........

census records show roughly 1817 and Parish records for Richard the son with Richard the father being just the two mentioned above for a search between 1812 and 1820 - both born in 1817. His dearth cert shows age 58 on death in 1874, so would assume 1816, but...!!!???

Do you have this certificate ?
Is it definately him ?

Deaths Jun 1874
MARTIN Richard - 58 - Eton 3a 275

If he was yet to have his birthday during the year he died ( i.e. would have turned 59 later that year) he would have been born 1815

Hi Mike - could well be...didnt see that one yesterday on Parish records. Where did you get the info from?
As to 1851 census - age shows 35, so that could tie in nicely with the 1815 birth

Thats definitely the marriage record - Many thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
Richard had a son called William - so I guess the names mentioned above could well tie in nicely
