Hi

I am trying to find any information on John ( I think) Mitchell. He married my grandmother in Geelong sometime before 1930 when my mother was born. My grandmothers name before marriage was Doris May Crook and after marriage Doris May Mitchell. In 1936 she lived in Price St Geelong. They had 3 Children, Kathleen Agnes born 4/10/1930, Norma Lorraine and William John. I don't know any other information on my grandfather - whether he left the marriage or died or what.

Hi Kerryn, these are the only two marriages coming up for that period in Vic. Are you sure that's where they married? Found these on vic bmd:

No I am not certain they were married except in 1936 in the electoral roll she was called Doris May Mitchell, I would say they probably married between 1920 -1930 but not sure. Does anyone have access to the electoral roll for 1930 for Geelong?

In the 1931 census there is a doris may mitchell living with a john william mitchell, at nine mile, Bendigo. John's occupation is given as Eucalyptus Distiller. There is nothing coming up for marriages between crook and mitchell up until 1940. Do you have one of the childrens birth certs? Regards Linda :)

I am not sure they were married but she is using his last name. Is there any other information about this John Mitchell - did he marry later or again? any children?

Mum just assumed the way my nana spoke that they were married and I don't know. My mum is currently looking for either her or her siblings birth certificates. I really only want to know some information about him eg where was he born, parents names ages, dob if possibe even if he wasn't married to my nana

I think as you say the last entry is probably them unless it's just coincidence that they named a son william john. Unfortunately without a marriage record it's hard to pin anything down. Shall try and look for deaths etc, so bear with me!! Regards Linda :)

Nothing as yet, but do you have a rough idea of when your nan died, and where? If we can find her death, that should give all the other details, parents, children, hsband etc, and then we can narrow him down. Linda :)

My nana died about 5 years or so ago maybe a bit longer. At that time she went by the name of Doris May Veitch but I have no idea if she was actually married to Albert Veitch who she lived with all the time I remember - we always thought he was our grandfather. She always lived at 101 St Albans Rd East Geelong for as long as I remember. I remember her taking me to kinda down at the church near her place so that was 52 yearsago. she lived there until she died.

Boy what a mess! I suppose in those days noone spoke about these things

Hi Kerryn,
Looks like 'hoping' could only find the same 1931 electoral roll entry which I sent you via pm.

If you mum can not find her original birth certificate, she can apply (& pay) for a copy.
Your mum would have to do this because of 'privacy acts', as she is still living.

Is there anything on Albert (?) Veitch at 101 St Albans Rd East Geelong in any of the reports you have access to? say around 1960? I don't know how long they were together or if he was married to Doris May

I think the only way to solve this is for your mum to find her birth cert, and or apply for your nana's death cert. That will give us a definite age, and therefore a birth date. And possibly other details. I'm not sure what they record on certs these days. Nothing is coming up for either her or johns birth or marriage or for albert. Which seems to suggest that they weren't born or married in Vic. See if you can find those and let us know what they say!! Regards Linda

One last try - is it possible to look up my mothers birth to find out who her parents were?

Her name was Kathleen Agnes Mitchell born on 4/10/1930 at Geelong as far as I know but may be bendigo

Can only access births up to 1921.

To find out the names listed on your mothers birth certificate, you would have to buy the certificate.
