My Great Grandfather was George Mitchell who married Maria McQuade in Kirkpatrick Flemming Scotland. They had 4 boys Arthur,William, Daniel and Alexander 1922 (granddad) and all lived in Annan, Dumfries and Galloway. George and Maria divorced and George moved to Carlisle and remarried Mary unknown who had two children Dorothy and Henry Irving (marys widow's name). I can't trace George as i can't find a death cert for him (died in Dalston, Carlisle poss about 1963) and i don't know where he was born so at a total dead end for last year, if anyone has any details however small it would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks. Christine x

The marriage took place in 1914 and can be found on scotlands people,

1 1914 MITCHELL GEORGE MCQUADE MARIA KIRKPATRICK FLEMING /DUMFRIES 837/02 0006

it has a couple of different spellings for mitchell, but his parents are George and Mary maiden name looks to be carriat, and mary's parents are arthur and maria ?rainey. The surname could be either mictahell, as signed by his father or mictchile as signed by george. You really would need to send for the copy in order to know for sure, but that may change what you need for his death cert.

Regards Linda :)

If this is George's second marriage, then the cerificate would give Mary's father's name.

George's birth could be earlier than 1897? When you get the marriage certificate from Scotlandspeople it will give you his age. You could also look to see if you can find a marriage for his parents on Scotlandspeople, that may then give you a rough idea of where he was born.

On the marriage in 1914 he is said to be 23 and she is 20. This means he would have been born about 1891.

I think the mothers m.s. may have been Carrick. If you look at the entry it seems like the maiden surname ends t. (t then full stop) however if you look at Kirkpatrick written in the next column the k at the end of the word look like t. as well.

trying to find the birth or the marriage for George and Mary his mother.

I was not expecting such a response and i am eternally greatful for all those who have give their time and effort to help me. The only info i had was Maria's family in 1901 census all the rest is new to me and i shall certainly follow up. There was talk of a Glasgow connection on Georges side but know one in the family knew where, i guess i may have my answer! I have not yet tried Scotlands people but will investigate further.

Thank you Thank You Thank you alll
