I think I would be tempted to buy one of the earlier marriage certificates to check his father's name and occupation. The 1867 birth certificate is the only likely looking one on freebmd so I would buy that. Sometimes, especially on later marriages the father's details are incorrect.

John Stell Mitchell b.1867 m. Gertrude Ada Hanson or Milnes in 1899. She must have died between 1901 (on census that yr with 3 children who were born 1890, 1892 and 1893 so he must. have had previous wife but who? Have gone through death records 1901 to 1912 twice to find death of Gertrude but no success. He married Anne Pocklington in 1912 and was a widower (1911 census) Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

I think you have to buy the birth certificates for the children to confirm who their mother's were.

I think that I would be buying ALL those John Stell Mitchell marriage certificates - even just to eliminate the marriages! There is a Louisa Greenwood on the 1891 census whose mother's name is Ann. It is possible that the 3 children on the 1901 census do not have the same mother.

Do remember that it wasn't uncommon for a widower to find a new wife quickly to look after his children so he could keep on working.

If all those marriages are your John Stell Mitchell, he does seem rather careless to lose so many wifes!!

He prob. was married 4 times (I knew of 3 marriages)
1889 to Frances Greenwood son George 1890 and son Arthur b. 1892. Frances prob died 1893. Remarried 1894 to either Louisa Driver or Eliza Elsworth (one of these would be mother of Anne b.1895) am tring to find the likely death date of either Louisa or Eliza) which must have been between 1895 and 1899 when he married Gertrude Ada Hanson (nee Milnes) and HER death before he married Anne Pocklington in 1912.
I have found a likely death for a Louisa in 1897 j-m qtr. but will now look for a Eliza. I think John Stell was a glutton for punishment!!!!!
