My grandfather was James Daniel Mitchell born 1909 married to Jane Manning. His brother was called George and had a Sister called Mary. His father was James Mitchell and Married to Helen Makewell and had a brother called Benjamin. James Mitchell of 1839 could be my great great grandfather and my mother says that they came from St George in the East. All were lightermen or dockers. I believe there is a James Mitchell of c1800 that was a ferryman on the Thames ferrying sailors from Bermondsey Butlers wharf to the Prospect of Whitney PH. The story goes that he drowned.
