My Ggrandfather Robert Mitchell was b. 1832 in Rotherhithe. His parents were Robert and Helena ( Ellen ) nee Lyons ( Lion( who were married in Newington, Surrey in 1831 .Robert senior was a carpenter/seaman and Helena must have died as I found Robert aged 9 on the 1841 Census of Rotherhithe in the care of Jeremiah Collins and his wife Ellen nee Sullivan both from Ireland. A sister Harriot was aged 7 and an Ellen aged 15 . Next time I found Robert was on the 1861 Census of North Shields aged 29 living with his stepmother Hannah a seaman's wife . Robert married in 1868 and remained in North Shields dying in 1925 aged 92. I'd love to find out where the Mitchells came from ...probably Ireland as witnesses at the christening were Irish and they were also R.C.Any info. gratefully accepted.
