Find Ancestors

I have asked this question before, but I have tried everything to try and find my Grt Grandfather William Lightbody Nicholson. He was born Dalton-Le-Dale 1843.His parents were David and Grace. He married Hannah Halliday 1866. I lost track of him on 1871 & 1881 census.Grt Grandmother didn't declare herself as a widow until 1891 census. I'm really curious as to where he was during those 20 years.
