Claire Report 20 Feb 2011 13:43

I'm looking for the young family of Robert Pearson and his wife Jane Elizabeth, who got married in the mid-1890s. By 1911, they should have a young daughter Ellen (born December 1910) and possibly another daughter Ada (born 1911). I don't know if the girls would have had older surviving siblings.

If that doesn't work, could someone also just try to find Ellen Pearson, born 20th December 1910, in the 1911 census? (Her birth is registered in January 1911.)

Many thanks!

I'm not certain but Guisbrough and Hartlepool crop up repeatedly in the family history. I think they married in Guisbrough.

Hello Claire, could you let us know what your source was for the names of Ellen's parents, and the birth years of Ellen and Ada?

There is no birth for an Ada around those areas, but there are 2 in 1912.

If you could let us know what info you have then we can try to trace the family with a degree of accuracy.

Catherine

Catherine Report 20 Feb 2011 14:20

How do you know that the couple married mid 1890's?
Do you know of any children born just after they married?
Do you know where and when Robert and Jane were born?

Catherine

Catherine Report 20 Feb 2011 14:25

You say that Ellen was born 20th Dec 1910 which means her birth would probably not have been registered until fist quarter of 1911.
This is the only birth registered at this time:-

Births Mar 1911 (>99%)
Pearson Ellen Hartlepool 10a 107

...........but this looks to be this one in 1911:-

.......so not correct parents???

We really need you to answer the questions, please!!!

Claire Report 20 Feb 2011 14:33

My sources are relatives who, unfortunately, are extremely elderly and can no longer really remember very well.

Ellen and Ada were both my mother's aunts, and both have died. Ellen was definitely born in December 1910, and Ada was a year or two younger. Most of their siblings were born after 1911 (including probably Ada) so the census could only help me with Ellen and her parents.

Unfortunately, my relatives argue over what her parents were called - Robert and Jane simply came up the most. The family is very estranged so memories conflict and there's a lot of people appearing on record who don't in family discussions, or vice versa. It's a complete mess.

Catherine, that birth record is indeed Ellen, hence I was hoping she'd crop up on the census. With Pearson being such a common name, and no real idea of who their mother was, I'm hitting a severe brick wall here.

If you are absolutely sure that that is Ellen, then I would start by buying the cert. This will give you her father's name and her mother's name and maiden name. Then you can look for a marriage, and if you buy that cert. it will give you lots more info about them, including their ages and father's names, which will help you find them in the census records.

Possibles for Ada:

Births Jun 1912
PEARSON Ada Pearson Guisbro 9d 963

Births Sep 1912
Pearson Ada Murray Hartlepool 10a 298

Births Mar 1914
PEARSON Ada Weir Hartlepool 10a 314

You should really follow the excellent advice that Catherine has given you.

If Ellen and Ada were your mother's aunts, then either your mother's father, or mother was a sibling. What was their name and where and when were they born?

Dea

Dea Report 20 Feb 2011 14:53

Yep............ that birth cert is definitely needed here!

Claire

Claire Report 20 Feb 2011 15:05

I'll get my hands on that certificate :)

My mother's father was their baby brother - Ronald Pearson, born in 1921, probably in Hartlepool. He was a bastard child, but the family seem to have the idea that he was the only bastard, rather than all of them being out of wedlock.

Catherine

Catherine Report 20 Feb 2011 15:12

Now that's interesting. This birth fits with what you say...................:-

Births Dec 1921 (>99%)
Pearson Ronald Wear Hartlepool 10a 245

......mother's maiden name is given as Wear. If you look back at the marriage in 1895 for Robert Pearson, the Jane Elizabeth on that record also has maiden name Wear? Could be a coincidence but may also be a transcript error on tees valley indexes. May be a good idea to contact them and ask if they can check the record.

Do your know of any other siblings?

Do you not have your dad's birth cert.?
