Jax, again, my thanks.

Just discovered what a 'point boy' was:
"For the uninformed, a point boy was a young boy who worked at trolley-bus road junctions and pulled respective handles attached to the overhead trolley wires, in order to allow the buses to proceed safely in the desired direction. If this was not done in time, the trolleys came off the wires and everything at the road junction stopped. "

Hi Adrian - the 'Ryerson Index' has a death notice for an Arthur Robert 'Dusty' Rhodes ..it was in the 'Townsville Bulletin' 21/10/2004. 'Ryerson's will do a 'look-up' for you.

Free bmd gives his name as just "Arthur" , I realise that sometimes middle names are added later

However, on the 1911 census his brother is listed as "John Edmond" .. 2 names, but he and his sister each only have the one name.

I can not find a marriage between an Arthur Rhodes and a Freda ?*? in Queensland up to 1934 (end of access) nor in NSW up to 1960 (end of access)

Nor can I find a death of a Freda Rhodes, in Queensland, from 1955 to 1964 (end of access)

I also can not find an electoral roll entry for a "Freda" Rhodes with an Arthur.

Gosh Julcoe - what a wealth of information! Thanks.

Can anyone please identify Arthur's second wife, Evelyn?

And perhaps pin down his date of death; it was the back end of 2001 or start of 2002. I'd planned a trip to see him (oh, and do some diving!) but he died a short time before we went in April '02.

Thank you all.

Adrian.

I have searched the Brisbane cemetery site but no Arthur,
I did find this extra info about Fredeline though...

Burial or Ashes Interred date .. 02 / 10 / 1959, 45years

At .. Lutwyche Cemetery
Street Address: Cnr Lutwyche and Kitchener Rds, Kedron

Do you know Arthur's address from 2001 ?
If he was living in the outer suburbs he may have been buried out of the Brisbane area.

Julcoe - you lovely person! Persevering on my behalf. Thank you.

I don't think I can give you much more about Arthur's death. This is terrible, because we did make a trip out to Australia, with visiting him very much in mind; I wanted to get information about my father's side of the family.

We went in April 2002; Arthur died, we think, about 6 weeks before we left - though it may have been a bit more. We did visit the home he had been living in; it was in the outskirts of Brisbane - but goodness knows where.

I had the honour of taking the 'Committal of Ashes' service for Arthur (I am a Church of England clergyman) but this was not in Brisbane. We seem to recall that his ashes were interred with those of his second wife, Evelyn.

You would think I would remember or have taken note of all of this - but I regret not.

Again, Julcoe, thank you for your help and perseverance. I guess you are in Australia. We shall be coming out again next August as I have to (!) attend an international Congress in Sydney and present a paper. Then off for another liveaboard on the GBR!

With very best wishes for the New Year.

Thanks, Julcoe.

This could be 'my' Evelyn. She was a very different character to the saintly Freda, and my folks didn't take to her. All I can remember is that (i) she was a divorcee, having previously been unhappily married to a Jehovah's Witness adherent, and (ii) she was the cousin of the (now deceased) Earl of Ducie.

This made my mother very happy; she used to be something of a snob - and so she struck up a relationship with Lady Alison and Basil, the Lord Ducie - and visited them quite a lot when he inherited the title and moved back to his estate in the UK. Oh the kudos that gave my mother!

Thanks again.
