Hi

I have been trying for over a year now to find a birth certificate for my husbands grandmother Bertha Roberts in an effort to find her father Benjamin and the Roberts line.

We have very little information other than Bertha moved from Staleybridge to Nottingham as an orphan at about the age of 4 when her father died. No mention of her mother.

On her marriage certificate it has her age as 18 on 30th May 1925, and her father as Bejamin Roberts (deceased) Engine Driver.

On her death certificate it has her date of birth as 25th March 1906, Staleybridge Manchester. As yet I have been unable to find anything.

Could someone please help!

Thank you

Carole

Could this one be a possibility?

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Births Mar 1905 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Roberts Bertha Ashton 8d 547

Ashton registration district covers Stalybridge. The date of birth on her death registration may not be correct. You could order this one and ask them to check the fathers name is Benjamin.

Hmmm, I do wonder Carole, if you are reading too much into the Staleybridge thing? I may well be way out but I did a little fishing myself and there was a young Benjamin Roberts, aged 16, living in Carnarvon, Wales on the 1901 census. He was just one of a few hundred nationwide, but this one sticks out because he was an engine driver at a quarry. Add to this you say Bertha was about 4 years old when her dad died and well, there is a death in Carnarvon in 1910, Benjamin Roberts aged just 26! Non of this may be connected but a strange coincidence of circumstances even so.

There are a couple of other things......a Benjamin Roberts also married in Carnarvon in 1902 (to either Annie Griffiths or Jane Williams, I couldn't tell you which), and there are four Bertha Roberts births in Wales in the first half of 1906, two of them in Wrexham and another in Holywell. Keep an open mind Carole....you may be looking in the wrong place.

Thanks Paul

I'm finding that word of mouth family history is not always what it seems...
I'll try your advice, and dig a little further.
