I am trying to find the parents and ancestry of Alfred Roberts, Railway Inspector (1901), who lived in Wigan but was born in Manchester in about 1858. He is my Great Grandfather. He married Margaret Alice Green. They had a son John (1883) who worked on the trams in Wigan. Daughters Jane and Sarah (1889; and 1896,) then a son Ernest (1898). Thanks in anticipation of all your help!

You need the marriage cert of Alfred & Margaret to find out fathers names and occupations. It might then be possible to track them down on census's with more accuracy.

Marriage cert will give you his father's name

Many thanks for the help and advice. (Finally remembered where I left this thread.)
I sent for a marriage certificate for Alfred and Margaret. They married in Wigan in 1882. It shows Alfred's father is Thomas Roberts. A carriage rug manufacturer. And I can't get any further back. So I am going to try Parish Records.
Alfred is from Rusholme, Chorlton. But he spent most of his life in Wigan. His father Thomas is very elusive!
