Hello,
It's time for me to turn my research to my dad's mum Joyce Roberts. I know her birth date was 23/10/1920 and that she was born Manchester (poss Salford).

Can someone point me in the right way to obtain information? How do i go about obtaining a birth certificate? I have so lucky with my other branches but I seem to have hit a dead end here.

Any information would be gratefully received,

If it is Salford then this looks like her birth:-

Births Sep 1920
Roberts Joyce A E (Dare) Salford 8d 117

gives mothers maiden name as Dare!
This Joyce has two middle names, could this be correct?

Possible birth registration but there are lots of Joyce Roberts registered in 1920, Her marriage cert would give her father's name to make search easier

The district Rochdale spans the boundaries of the counties of Greater Manchester and Lancashire

Thanks guys - yes that's my problem - there's a few Joyce Roberts floating about!

She married twice - Harry Downes and that would be in the East End London somewhere - poss in the 1940s (my dad born 1947) and to Alec Rennicks/Renicks (which is another problem, spellingwise!!)

Just thought! If birth is 23/10 then the birth wouldn't have been registered until Dec quarter, so 1920 Salford birth can't be correct?

Yes Catherine, that's what i thought - her birth would be in the Dec vol right?
Why can't my dad recall any facts that would be helpful?! :)

Samantha, do you not know if she had any siblings?
Did she never talk about her parents or aunties and uncles?

Unfortunately I can't recall - she may have had a sister. Her mother was definitely Roberts, but then there's nothing to say she could've married again and Joyce maiden name is something else!!

I do know that there are Clarkes somewhere in the family - she is related to Alan Clarke of the Hollies!!
