I believe my father Frederick Roberts was in the army prior to going into the navy as a submariner.
Is there any list I can see.I have his army number.
Also is there a naval personnel list. I only seem to be able to find army or navy killed in both wars.

Where and when was he born and what was his Army number?

When approx would he joined the Navy? Records for those joining up to 1923 are here

ancestry.co.uk has all the surviving records of soldiers from WW1 ..... only about 30% of the records survived WW2, and many are damaged.

If you are very lucky, then you might find that your father's records survived.

If you do not have access to ancestry, post a little more information and someone will try to find him ......... birth date, birth place, and the army number that you ahve.

I assume that Frederick was in the Army WWl and the Navy in WWll. If this is the case you could look for his medal card for WWl, and thes can be found at:

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/browse-refine.asp?CatID=10&searchType=browserefine&pagenumber=1&query=*&queryType=1

I have had a quick look and there are some 500+ records for Frederick Roberts the info contained of the free search is limited, but may ring a few bells - hopefully.

good luck

Many thanks for your help. Sorry I took so long to reply. Apart from telephone line trouble. I didn't know how to find the replies. I will certainly take the advice given and if I get stuck I now know where to come for help. Once again thank you all very much.

Joy.
