Find Ancestors

I was wondering if anyone could help.

My grandmother was Barbara Robinson born 9 April 1930?? in or around the Dewsbury area. She was the daughter of a Margarite Irene (unsure if correct spelling or middle name and don't know maiden name). Barbara had a brother called Jack Robinson.

Does anyone know anything that could help?

Yes that's the marriage!

Looked in Dewsbury because have a photograph of their wedding taken by a Dewsbury photographer. Spen Valley is near Dewsbury.

What sort of information are you looking for?

If you buy the marriage certificate, that will give you the names of the bride and grooms parents which will help you trace their families back.

You can do this online from the GRO and if you use the reference (ie year, quarter, vol no, page no and registration district) - tick the box that says 'is the GRO reference known' - it will only cost you £7.00.

That certificate should hopefully come back with Barbara's father as Harry Robinson. If that's the case then you could buy the marriage certificate for Harry Robinson/Marguerite Auty to get the names of their parents.

With that information the families should be traceable on the census records.

For tracing birth/marriage/death registrations you should look at this site

It's free to use and new records are being added all the time. It goes from 1837 to the 1930's at the moment although not all quarters/years are complete yet so for the later records you may not find what you're looking for at the moment.

You could always try the 14 day free trial on Ancestry.

There's also a thread on the Tips Board which gives members favourite websites for finding information. If I can find it I'll nudge it up for you.

And don't forget to Google everything - I found one of my 'lost' ancestors by Googling his name. Turned out he was on a merchant ship in WW1 which was sunk by a UBoat.

Try using the search tree facility at the top of the board - put in details of your relatives and see what matches there are with other tree owners and then send them a PM asking if there might be a link. I've had a lot of very positive feedback by doing this.

Now ordered the marriage certificate of Barbara Robinson and Cyril P Castle! Wait and see...

Marriage Certificate came back for Cyril Percy Castle and Barbara Robinson.

Barbara was 21 which ties in with a yr of birth as 1923. Father's name Harry Robinson (deceased). One of the witnesses was Marguerite Irene Robinson.

So now have my first piece of the puzzle!

So, the next step would be to get the marriage certificate for Harry Robinson and Marguerite Auty which should confirm that her father was John W Auty and will also give you the name of Harry's father so you will be able to trace him back.
