www.192.com does some free searches but its not cheap to view electoral roll addresses.
Jean on Records Board offers electoral roll look ups that may be better for you

Hi,

I think I have found a living relative on 192.com, I do not know where they live. there surname is the same as mine but it is very rare.

How would I go about contacting them, without buying credits on 192.com.

Cheers, James

Whirley's ER lookup thread

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.asp?wci=thread&tk=1133232

easy method: in the address line above, change the "1188533" after the = sign to 1133232 and hit enter.

Direct link for sending Whirley a message:

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/contact.asp?wci=messagenew&contact_key=2416966

Whirley asks that requests be sent by private message and NOT posted in her thread because they involve personal info about living people.

You can do a preliminary search at 192.com yourself to see whether they appear there.

Would everyone to whom it may be useful in future take a minute to go to Whirley's thread and *bookmark it* for future ref? It will then usually appear near the top of your bookmarks list as people post in it fairly regularly.

You may need to change the .co.uk to .co.za (South Africa) or whatever portal you are using.

Another tip for free searches of 192.com

If you find someone who looks likely, look at the number of Xs for the county name. Then puzzle it out.

For example, eight Xs will be Cornwall, Cheshire or Somerset. Etc.

Then try using a county with the right number of Xs as part of your search for the name, in the location box. Once you guess right, the location will appear in your search results instead of Xs.

You may then get possible telephone listings as well. See whether any of the addresses match the number of Xs in the house number, street, etc. in the electoral roll listings. Or try another search using the post code for a telephone listing for J Smith in Cornwall, for instance, as the location for an electoral roll search for John Smith.

If you use up your free searches for the day, open a different browser (I switch from Firefox to IE) and start again!

Would you use the Edit link in the lower left of your first post to delete the list of names and dates? They're living, and they don't know they're being talked about on the internet. ;)

Shani

You should not put names and dates on here referring to living people.

It is a breach of their privacy - and totally contrary to GR's guidelines.

Please delete the details ASAP

Many apologies, I didn't realise. I have deleted the names in my first post. Am I allowed to privately talk with people re; living relatives?

Shani, it's a really tough question. Obviously if you're looking for someone you have to say who they are! ;)

Often though we get into discussions of somebody's parents not being married, a parent having committed bigamy or being divorced for adultery or deserting their families, and even if those people are deceased, their kids are living. The thing is that discussions here often can be found by a search engine like google - so there's always the chance that someone's father-in-law or employer, or one of the kids in question themselves, could find it if they googled the name. (One set of my cousins, obnoxiously devout fundamentalist Christians, only found out last year that their mother was pregnant when their parents married, when the parents finally admitted it was not really their 50th anniversary, it was their 49th. Everybody else in the family knew! - and we're talking about 'kids' over 50! But still, not something to discover on the internet.)

I think your info was just a little detailed, to some of us. Of course, if you hadn't had it, it's exactly what we would have gone looking for in the indexes ... but then sent to you privately.

My own favourite solution is exactly what happened here -- put some info like that on the board, but then delete it when the info sought has been found or if it becomes obvious it isn't going to be. Or leave just enough, like names and places, that if the person does google themself (or do a search here at GR), they'll find you. ;)
