I did find this thread on the British Geneaology site
This is the thread - it is much longer than I have posted

Conflicting census records
I'm struggling with tracking my Great Grandmother, Sarah Jane Robinson.
The 1891 census record shows her living in Thornaby (then part of Stockton-on-Tees) with her husband John Thomas Blackburn (I think married 1883 December quarter at Northallerton (9d 1219)) and my grandmother Sarah Jane, then 11 months old.
The two census returns I have managed to trace her on have differing birthplaces. The 1891 record states Yarlington, Yorkshire (could this be Darlington, Co. Durham?) and the 1901 census record says born in Driffield. The obvious conclusion may that they are two different people but both the correct father and mother (at the correct ages) and have Sarah Jane Blackburn (their daughter) at the correct age (daughter Mary Elizabeth Blackburn died) and the birthplace of the father is constant across both records, only Sarah's birthplace differs.
I have found a Sarah Jane Robinson born in Darlington in both 1868, christened the 31st May 1868 at the Holy Trinity, Darlington, Durham, England whose father is John Robinson and mother Mary, and I've also found a Darlington birth for Sarah Jane Robinson in 1869 (10a 27). BMD records no births for Sarah Jane Robinson (or even Sarah Robinson) between 1866 and 1870.
So I'm stuck with two conflicting birthplaces Yarlington, Yorkshire or Driffield, neither of which provide a clue. The only progress I can make is by changing Yarlington, Yorkshire to Darlington, Durham, and that seems too large a leap. As a last resort I could request GRO for the marriage certificate, but that would probably only provide ma with her father's name (and as no Sarah Jane Robinson was born in either census recorded places, that's not really going to help me be certain I've the correct person.

Reply With Quote -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It's definately the same family on the 1891 and 1901 census'. However on the 1891, it looks like Sarah Jane was born in "Yidlington". There is no such place that I can find, but Bridlington is close to Driffield, so maybe this is where she is from and it has just been mistranscribed due to poor hand writing.
Reply With Quote -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Looking at the possibilities for Sarah Jane Robinson pre 1891, there are so many that I would recommend ordering the marriage cert for a Father's name. It would narrow the search significantly on the census and may even help in tracing a baptism (if there was one of course)

Looking at the actual image for the 1891 census, Sarah's birthplace is Yorkshire, Yidington
