He was born in Bold, United Kingdom, immigrated to Australia in 1839, married, in 1846 to Eliza Jane Wood (born in Canada, immigrated to Ireland, then Australia). Moved to New Zealand with wife and children in 1868. Lived at Cheviot, Cheviot Hills.
