Hello everyone.

In my tree I have a Jane Scott, born 1874 in Drighlington, West Yorkshire. I am interested in finding her parents. I found her (well I think it's her) in the 1891 census, with a brother, William (born 1860). However, there are two issues. 1) On the 1891 census, I'm pretty sure it says step great-grandaughter, So I'm not sure who her parents actually are; and 2) I cannot find her on the 1881 census. I find her brother in the following household http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/census/household_record.asp?HOUSEHOLD_CODE=1881BR_4596003&HOUSEHOLD_SUB=1&frompage=5

I was just wondering if anyone could find her on the 1881 census or work out who her parents actually were.

Much appreciated.
xx

Ancestry has transcribed her as step-grandaughter in 1891. Do you think the image says step-gr-grdaughter?

Mary Ann Scott would be a little young for that. ;)

Name: Jane Scott
Age: 17
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1874
Relation: Step Granddaughter
Where born: Drighlington, Yorkshire, England

Civil Parish: Drighlington
County/Island: Yorkshire
Registration district: Bradford

Mary Ann Scott 54
William Scott 31
Jane Scott 17

There's only one birth at FreeBMD that matches -- I searched in West Yorkshire, 1872-1876:

Births Jun 1873
SCOTT Jane Bradford, Y. 9b 22

Oops, sorry, there's another possible:

Births Jun 1874
Scott Jane Isabella Bradford, Y. 9b 254

In 1891 Mary Ann Scott is head, widow, 54. William Scott is her step-son, single, 31 and Jane Scott is her step-grandaughter, age 17.

William in 1891:

Name: William Scott
Age: 31
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1860
Relation: Stepson
Gender: Male
Where born: Drighlington, Yorkshire, England

Mary Ann Scott is head of household, widow, housekeeper.
William Scott is her stepson, single, coal miner
Jane Scott is her step-granddaughter, single, cloth weaver.

I checked the image, and those are what it definitely says.

It sounds like Mary Ann married William's father, and the husband is now deceased.

Jane Scott would appear to be the daughter of another child of Mary Ann Scott's husband (William being a little young, and Jane not being there in 1881).

The 1881 matches -- Jane born in Batley, others in Drighlington, as in 1891.

Let's look some more ...

Could this be her in 1881?
Moat Hill, Gomersall, Birstal, Yorkshire
Joseph Jennings, head, 37, stone getter unemployed, born Rothwell
Eliza, wife, 28, born Adwalter
Jane Scott, wife's daughter, 7, born "

1871 in Drighlington

Ben Scott 41
Elizabeth Scott 43
Ann Scott 20
Eliza Scott 15
William Scott 11
Thomas Scott 7

Ben Scott married Mary Ann after Elizabeth's death, it would seem.

Looking for them in 1861, to get the full complement of Ben's children, but no luck so far, will try tricks.

Btw, I love a guy who gives a link. ;) Found the 1881 census household in a jiffy that way!

Jane is likely the daughter of one of Ben's daughters.

thanks for this so far guys. Sorry, i didn't mean step great-grandaughter... I just meant step grandaughter.... If it IS step grandaughter, then it can't be Mary Ann Scott's deceased husband's child, and I have looked on an earlier census, and there are no other male children that would be able to father Jane apart from William or his brother Thomas, who I cannot track down in any later censuses (altho, Thomas is in the 1881 census, so if it were his, they weren't living together)....

James ... women had children with men they weren't married to. ;)

In most such cases, the children were registered under the mothers' surnames.

And very often ended up living with grandparents.

Can't find these people in 1861!
