Seek BRITISH SPENCER Cousins--- Are there any folk out there that descend from 'Henry of Badby' (ie- Henry Spencer of Badby,Northants.)--b.c.1385/d.c.1476-- who m. Isabel LINCOLN --and from whom 4 inter-related Spencer branches descend?(ie-'Spencers of Bedfordshire'; 'Nicholas of Cople' (branch 'off' the Bedfordshire line---Nick,Jr.became Gov.of Virginia-in early 1600s); 'Spencers of Althorp' (Princess Diana's line);and 'Marlborough Spencers' (a branch 'off' the 'Althorp' line)-Winston Churchill's line (ie-as his real full name was Winston SPENCER-Churchill). Anyway, I seek anyone who still TODAY possess the Spencer surname (or was their maiden name) who is in Britain that knows they descend from any of the above lines. Also if they haven't gotten that far back, but know that they descend from any of the following---- Daniel Spencer lived c.1600-1660 was successful London grocer---who died owning many properties, including the 'Red Lion Inn' in Hitchin' (hertfordshire). Or if you descend from his uncle, Richard Spencer c.1575-1630-ish, who was a haberdasher w/ his own shop along London Bridge, in London. If you descend from any of the above and possess Spencer surname still today(or was maiden name) PLEASE contact me,as i have much Spencer info (of these families) to share----lineage charts/Old Spencer photos/ bible page info/ family history,etc.,etc. Desperately seeking my British (blood) SPENCER cousins!!!

Dear Amanda,

Sorry for month-long delay i was away and offline (no computer access 'til now)!!

Ok there are several ways to go about finding-out WHICH Spencer clan of (HUNDREDS of different (un-related (by blood) to each) other Spencer fam-ilies there are, globally(or just in England for that matter!!).

The old-fashioned way--finding paper records--which is the "basis" of genealogy--since MOST everything is NOT ONLINE (and a lot of what IS online is WRONG or mixed-up (like putting one clan into another that really are not related)- is to "work
backwards" from what you know, step-by- step. Be- cause EACH paper you get (say, a birth, death or marriage certificate COPY) will give you MORE CLUES.They often TELL that person's PARENTS' names, and/or town they lived in,etc. Town/city names are important-because THAT's "where" you will LOOK NEXT for RECORDS.

For example-let's say you somehow do find a copy of your grandpa Spencer's death certificate (this you can do by calling the county (shire) that he died in and find WHICH court or place HAS the death certif- icates (i think in england it is the PRO--public rec-ords office?)They can copy death certificate/send to you for a small fee of a few dollars. That certificate will USUALLY say info such as WHERE he was BORN.(And PROBABLY (unless he spent his entire
life in ONE place) will be A DIFFERENT CITYthan where he DIED. So then that paper--the death cer-tificate is giving you a NEW CLUE--ie- the name of town your grandpa was born in--and THAT is im-portant because NOW you know WHERE to look to GET his BIRTH Certificate (ie-you can check either w/you PRO (online or phone call) or you can either go to or phone the town's library and ask about Par-ish records for that town--and then via them -re- quest a birth certificate copy--as THAT GIVES YOU your grandpa's PARENTS' NAMES/PLACES of living (which again may be an altogether different place from where your grandpa was born)--so then OFF you GO AGAIN--to follow the NEW CLUE from the birth certificate---to go back in time-step by step. (and NOT just b/m/d (birth/marriage/death) certificates--there are ENDLESS PAPER DOCU-MENTS that can ADD INFO and GIVE CLUES to your search.

There're everything from Wills,Land records (deeds),
and school records, to old "city directories" (like telephone books, but before phones--so they tell the address of where someone lived in that year and what they did for a living and much else!!). There are also old newspaper announcements(like wedd-ing,parties,etc-giving names,or mentions of relation-ships to others in them).

You also can find-out much from funeral homes and cemeteries(a Sexton is the person at a particular cemetery who keeps the file cards with info on them of EACH person BURIED in that graveyard--and it often will say WHO that person's parents were or who paid for the burial(usually another relative-who might have info for you!!).

There are of course also Military and Medical rec-ords,and Employment/Social Organizations records
as well as Court Records (of Divorce,Adoption,Busi-
ness Disputes, etc.),Police and/or Coroner files (if someone died in an accident or by a crime commi-tted onto them). And also all the CENSUSes that tell who was in a family at what date in time and where.

Now yes lots online but also-IF you know the TOWN where your grandpa was either born, lived or died. You can START THERE!! Just write or call to either the main court there or the main Parish church (or go online to see if that town has a website for their Vital Records(b/m/d records) or OTHER info as above.

One of the quickest/easiest ways to find info is to call the town's LIBRARY and ask to speak to their REFERENCE DESK. Either a librarian at THAT desk will help you-or they may even HAVE their own Reference person who SPECIALISES in Genealogy--and they will connect you by phone over to them.

You can then easily ASK that person--"What kinds of Genealogy RESOURCES do you have for your town or county(shire)?" They may say to you--"Oh well we have, an Index of everyone who was marri- ed here in this town---if you give me the last name I can look it up right now!" (and you may get some info right then and there!). Or they might say "We have burial records, school records,Census Indexes, and copies of certain years of City Directories".

Then you simply ask if they are able to do "lookups" then if you give your person's Last and First name to them or do they require that you email/write them w/the info for them to look-up? (often they can do right then-but sometimes not). Also ask if there is a fee---small towns--usually not or very small fee--
larger cities w/way-more info to search thru(through) will have some kind of cost.

The OTHER way to FIGURE OUT WHICH SPENCER family YOUR Spencers BELONG TO is via a $99 (U.S.)dollar DNA (male) y-line SURNAME (genetic) "marker" test (any MALE in your family w/Spencer last name can do this---TO CONTINUE IN NEXT POST-OUT OF ALLOWED LETTERS---

AMANDA----PART II cont.....

Ok where was i---oh yes---The OTHER way to FIGURE OUT WHICH SPENCER family YOUR Spencers BELONG TO is via a $99 (U.S.)dollar DNA (male) y-line SURNAME (genetic) "marker" test (any MALE in your family w/Spencer last name can do this-- ie- a brother of yours, an uncle (dad's brothers), or cousins (dad's brothers' sons),or if grandpa has brothers still living-they could also do the male Spencer DNA test).

It is a simple swab of the inside of the cheek-and send back swabber in envelope provided w/$99 payment (or whatever British Pounds equivalent is!) and in JUST 3 WEEKS you will KNOW WHICH Spencer clan you belong to!!!

This group rate Spencer dna testing is done thru the SHGS(Spencer Historical and Genealogical Society) in the U.S.-(NO NEED TO GO THERE haha-just go to their WEBSITE for info/instructions) Their web-site address is.....
wwwdotSpencerSocietydotorg (hope this computer system ALLOWS me to write it this way-as it usu-ally stops one from putting email or web addresses in here-we shall see!)

Anyway--once you go to the website-when the 1st (home)page comes-up -if you look at the top from left to right, the 6th box over to the right says DNA-
so CLICK ON THAT BOX--that takes you to a page
that explains and has a LINK (that you click on)that
takes you to the website of their genetic testing company (familytrees).

The GREAT thing about doing the easy/not-too- costly DNA test--is that WHICHEVER Spencer
"clan" your male Spencer relative that does the test ends-UP IN-those people in THAT Spencer GROUP
will not ONLY be YOUR BLOOD RELATIONS but
also will most likely HAVE PAPERWORK that will give you MORE INFO about your family or take you further back in time to earlier Spencer ancestors of yours!!!

Ok I really hope all this info in the 2 postings i have made will help you Amanda ---you can also write me directly if you wish---at ......
