In 1841 I have John and Ann Strangeways living in Easingwold with their 6 children.
In 1851 the couple are living in Hunslet, Leeds, at 67 Butterworth Court with John, Jane and William. (Their name has been misspelt Strangways)The eldest son is living in Scotland. 2 other sons Robert b 1831 and George b 1835 appear not to be with the family. They were born in Co Durham. Can anyone find them for me please?

Mother is called Ann. The family are all together in 1841, and Binnie is a
grandmothers name.

That's an interesting list Vera, must be a shop?

Vera

Vera Report 1 May 2011 22:58

Looks like they all worked for Alfred Denby.......but the house must have been very large as they all lived there.

I found my ggrandfather Rob Colville Strangeways grave in Beeston (Leeds) cemetery. There are 5 others in there called Strangeways.

George Binnie S - his brother
Sarah Elizabeth S - his mother
Thomas S - his son
Sarah Elizabeth M S - his dau
plus Margaret S 1823-1860

Can anyone please find out anything about Margaret, she doesn't seem to be on any census with the family.

Robt's parents were John and Ann (Colville), married 14.11.1821. in Lesbury, Northumberland
The oldest son was born no later than 1825 in Northumberland then moved away to Edinburgh. The next few children were born in South Shields.
Ann's parents were called Nicholas and Margaret, their children were bapt in Alnwick or Wooler.

Thank you for your help, alviegal.

Would anyone kindly look for Margaret in 1841 please? She would have been 18 then, so possibly in service elsewhere?
The family were living in Easingwold then.

Her occ is recorded as Teacher, which may rule her out, of course

BUT.......try looking yourself at the free sites - you may find something useful

Thanks erica, I have already searched familysearch, and nothing has turned up on freecen.

nameslessone

nameslessone Report 2 Jan 2023 11:49

On the census entry mentioned above Margaret is shown as not born in county but also an indication that she was either born in Ireland or Scotland - I can’t decide which.

As a teacher she is unlikely to be the young wife of Thomas so they must be brother and sister, but he does not have the same indicator.

If her father was an Excise Man then he would have been moved around the country, not staying in one place for long.

grannyfranny

grannyfranny Report 2 Jan 2023 12:06

Thanks for that, names. Of the parents, John was from Berwick upon Tweed, and Ann was from near Alnwick, where they married.
The 3rd and subsequent children were born in South Shields, and I knew that Thomas, who I always thought was the first child, was maybe born in Northumberland, but was in Edinburgh in 1846 until he died.
I only discovered Margaret the other day when I found her in the family grave in Leeds, so this is quite a surprise.

It looks like the 1841 Alnwick one. Margaret is a teacher and Thomas is a Chemist Apprentice.
