Trying to find any information on my Great Grandfather, George Francis Taylor, who lived at 108 Rosebery Avenue, Clerkenwell in 1896 with his wife, Edith Evelyn Bushby. He was the assistant manager of the Victoria Hotel in Northumberland Avenue, by Trafalgar Square, London, now The Grand Hotel.

Hi Lindsey...
I haven't found a marriage for George and Edith either. Edith's death certificate records her as George's wife, and George (who was the informant) is recorded as Edith's widower, but it's possible they never actually married. I don't know if he remarried after Edith's death, that's possible too. An elderly member of my family said that George 'just disappeared' after Edith's death and no one seems to know what happened to him.

Hi Dee...
Thank you for that suggestion, if George did remarry then that one's a possibility. Assuming George was around the same age as Edith, the age in the 1901 census would be about right. I will certainly hang on to that info as a 'definite possible'...thank you.

Hi Elaine,
Tracing that George back brings us to this in 1881, his mothers name interested me;
1881 England Census about George Frances Taylor Name: George Frances Taylor Age: 15 Estimated birth year: abt 1866 Relation: Son Father's Name: Lewis Mother's Name: Emily Gender: Male Where born: Wells, Somerset, England Civil parish: South Mimms County/Island: Middlesex Country: England Street Address: Wrotham Park Farm Education:
Employment status: View image Occupation: Scholar Registration district: Barnet Sub-registration district: South Mimms ED, institution, or vessel: 6 Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age Lewis Taylor 42 Emily Taylor 40 George Frances Taylor 15 Annie Bertha Taylor 13 Maurice Lacy Taylor 11 Lewis Longdon Taylor 3 Sarah Ann Farr 19 Knowing that George and Edith had a daughter which they named Emily makes me wonder if this is the correct George?

Hi Dee,
Thank you, I agree, that's beginning to look rather promising! Particularly with that George's mother's name being Emily. I've found and printed out copies of the original census transcripts for both 1881 and 1901. Also tried a search for 1891...found George's father Lewis still in South Mimms, Middlesex but at a different address and with a new wife and a new child. George, of course, has grown up and gone...so far haven't found him, but will keep trying. Thanks again, Dee, this is the best potential lead I've had so far...and it's very much appreciated!

Hi Elaine,
I had a look on the 1891 census for George, Annie and Maurice and never found them............ I see Maurice and George in 1901, just so frustrating not to find them in 1891!!!!

Hi Dee,
Yes, it is frustrating...have just done another 1891 search again tonight, nearest I've come up with is this...
George Taylor . . . Age : 26 ... Born in : 1865 ... . . . Relation to the head of household: Lodger ... . . . Profession: Railway Labourer ... Birth county : Somerset ... Birth parish: Not Known ... . . . Address: North Road Fox Inn Old Toll Bar House ... Area: Grantham South, Grantham, Lincolnshire
