I am trying to find information about James and Jemima. Her name is sometimes spelt Jammima.

In 1851 Census they were living in Crown Point, Newton Heath, Manchester with children Edwin, Joseph, Matilda, Harriet and Samuel. I'm particularly interested in finding out more information about Jemima who according to 1851 Census was born in France as a British Subject around1817 and she was a hand loom silk weaver

Brummiejan,

The 1861 census is very interesting because when my ancestor Harriet Taylor married George Beesley in 1863 Matilda Southall was a witness! Perhaps Jemima had died?

But this is the information I have from 1851 census

1851 Census

1851 Census film HO 107 2231 Folio 298

Crown point, Newton heath.

James Taylor Head M 37 Overlooker of powerloom silk /Newton
Jammima Wife M 34 Hand loom silk weaver/France, British subject.
Edwin Son S 16 Bleacher/Lancashire, Failsworth
Joseph Son S 12 Silk mill/Lancs, Newton
Matilda Dau S 7 /Lancs, Newton
Harriet Dau S 4 /Lancs, Newton
Samuel Son S 2 /Lancs, Newton

If you are correct and she was only 24 then 2 of the children wouldn't have been hers

I want to thank you so much, your information has really helped clear things up with regards to Jemima.

I have now found a reference to the birth of Edwin Taylor in 1835 with parents James and Rebecca. This led me to search for an earlier marriage between James and Rebecca and BINGO!

James Taylor married Rebecca Jemima Johnson in Manchester in 1834

Ann, I do think she was 34 and the age was mis-transcribed as it is so hard to read. I'll submit correction to Ancestry for them to have a look.

Glad to have helped - not sure how I have though!

Jan,

You have helped because Jemima has been bugging me for a number of years because I just haven't been able to find anything other than the 1851 census. Now I have found that she has two names it explains it a bit.

There is quite a bit of stuff on the LDS site but it has been added by a member and I think quite a lot of it is assumption, especially now I have found the marriage of James to Rebecca Jemima! You have no idea how happy I am!

I hope you don't mind me asking a favour, according to the 1861 census, where was Rebecca born?

Well, in 1861 there are just ditto marks which means her birthplace has been transcribed as Newton. However in 1871:

1871 England Census

Name: Rebecca J Taylor
Age: 57
Estimated birth year: abt 1814
Relation: Wife
Spouse's name: James
Gender: Female
Where born: France
Civil parish: Newton
Ecclesiastical parish: All Saints
County/Island: Lancashire
Country: England
Registration district: Manchester
Sub-registration district: Newton

James Taylor 59
Rebecca J Taylor 57
Samuel Taylor 22
Olivia Taylor 19
Robert Taylor 15
Thomas Johnson 20

I see what you mean now about how I came in handy with the 1861 census! Never occurred to me it was the same person, nice bit of research on your part. Sometimes a I think our ancestors were having a joke at our expense!!

Jan,
All the little bits of information are useful, it's a bit like all the different pieces of a jig saw., they all seem unimportant on their own but put them together and the result is amazing.

The 1861 Census was also helpful because of the fact that Robert Southall was living in the same house as Matilda, I then found a marriage record for them. Because Matilda Southall was a witness at Harriet's marriage it helps to confirm that this is definitely the correct family.

What's also interesting is that Olive has now become Olivia by 1871!

Many thanks for your help

Ann
