Hi all.

Amelia, Clara Taylor was born in Chelsea, London, 1881 and married Benjamin Roach in 1902. The marriage record shows her father to be Joseph Taylor a stone mason by trade. In 1881 Joseph is living with his wife Hannah and their children Joseph, Christopher, James and Alice. Ten years later Joseph is now married to Mary Jane and living with children; James, H, Alice H, Asher, E? Amelia, C and Timothy, W.

I have managed to locate Joseph's 2nd marriage to Mary Jane however, can't find his first marriage to Hannah. Can anyone help?

Many thanks in advance.

I assume Joseph was shown as a widower on the marriage cert?

Yes sorry forgot to say he was a widower when he married for a second time. ;-)

With such a common name my inclination would be to try & locate a birth for one of the children and get the cert to find out Hannah's maiden name. Or maybe someone can look up a baptism for you on Ancestry?

Thanks for your help. I did look up births for children with the parents as Joseph and Hannah but without success.

I have just looked up Amelia's baptism record on Ancestry and find that her mother's name is Annie Charlotte and not Hannah! It is definitely correct as have checked out her siblings Joseph, Christopher, James and Alice who all have the same parents on their baptism records and their father Joseph is listed as a stone mason.

Now just have to find out the mother's maiden name and when they got married. I guess it must just been an error on the 1881 Census having her listed as Hannah.

Many thanks again.

I think Ann, Annie, Hannah were fairly interchangeable - and of course we might have enumerator error (or maybe Joseph was trying to sound posh by ading an H!)

I wonder if this might fit? Though perhaps too late if they had so may children by 1881:

Marriages Mar 1877 (>99%)
Lowman Ann Charlotte Kensington 1a 166
Taylor Joseph Kensington 1a 166

You could well be right that he married Ann, Charlotte Lowman in 1877! I had assumed Joseph had probably married by about 1870 however, I should know by now that you shouldn't assume anything!

The info regarding the marriage to Ann, Charlotte Lowman fits as I know that Joseph's father was James Taylor who was also a stone mason.

Have just found out the Joseph first wife Annie, Charlotte died in 1887 aged 33 and he then married Mary, Jane Bowerman two years later.

Thanks guys this is really helpful. ;-)
