John Taylor, my g.grandfather, stated on the census returns for 1901 and 1911 that he was born in Mellor, Derbyshire and from the age given the year of birth was 1848
Mellor was then a tiny village close to Marple Bridge which was then in Derbyshire but is now in Cheshire or even part of the Metropolitan borough of Stockport.
The GRO have been unable to trace a birth record for the years 1847-51.
There was a Taylor family living at Marple Bridge Forge in 1861
who had a son, John, born c. 1850. Can this be "my" John Taylor.
Would appreciate any info from decendants of John Taylor, late of Old St Broadbottom, Mottram, Cheshire. His daughter, Mary Ann, born 1886/7 was my paternal grandmother.
I am Frank Ballington

Until 1875, there was no penalty for not registering births, so his birth may simply not have been registered.

Thanks for the info re John Taylor. Regret I do not have surname of his second wife, Sarah Ann. who may have I tried to obtain copy birth cert for their daughter, Mary Ann but there is no record of her birth 1886-88.
Looking now for decendants of Fred, Josep or Sidney, sons of John and Sarah who may have more family data. I know that Sidney, son of the above Sidney Taylor, married Ellen (Nellie), daughter of Mary Ann Taylor.

Frank - you haven't actually answered many of the questions. Is the 1891 census posted the correct John Taylor (seems to be as you are now asking about the children listed on it).

What was John's father's name and occupation from his marriage certificate please? It may then be possible to identify John with his parents on the 1851 census to narrow the year of his birth.

To find descendants of the children on the 1891 census try searching trees on this site or looking on Freebmd. You say the Sidney Taylor married Ellen, daughter of Mary Ann Taylor. Was Taylor also Ellen's surname please?

Thanks for the info .
In response to the questions - 1891 census is definately the right family, address known from family records.

I do not yet have John's fathers forename. Not yet found his marriage to Sarah Ann.

Sidney Taylor, son of John Taylor, also had a son Sidney who, late in life, married Ellen (Nellie) widow of Frank Taylor. (This Frank Taylor was also related to, but not a son of John Taylor. )
Her maiden name was Ballington.
Mary Ann Taylor, sister of Sidney Taylor the first married Samuel William Ballington in 1908. Look at my family tree - two of my father's siblinhgs married their cousins!!
I will apply today for a birth cert for my garndma, Mary Ann using the Ashton filio and page number.
