I have a good deal of information on Fanny, who was baptised Frances in Kings Somborne (near to Little Sombourse, which censuses give as birth place) in 1834. She was the daughter of Henry and Martha (who turns out to have been nee Cooper)

She is aged 5 in 1841 with maternal grandparents, James and Frances Coopers,as Frances (mispelled), a William Cooper and then, beneath them her mother Martha, now Osman, and John Osman (same address).

Her next census appearance is in 1861 married to William and with a couple of children. She actually had several more children and then died in 1870.

However I can't find her in 1851. I would really like to know what she was doing - she didn't marry intil 1857.

I have looked under Fanny, Frances, no Christian name and then no surname and all I have found is a Fanny Cooper servant, in Basingstoke. She is said to have been born c 1834 in Basingstoke.

It might be that the head didn't know or care where she was born but I'm also concerned that Basingstoke is about 24 miles from where she was born. Also she married in Winchester, which is where I was hoping to find her.

Any ideas anyone please?

Thanks, Elizabeth, I had seen her baptism but hadn't noticed the 'of London'. That has to be Henry who was from London, since Martha was baptised in King's Somborne.

Thank you everyone who looked. If Fanny Cooper isn't her, it looks as if she can't be found in 1851. It just might be her if she borrowed her grandparents' name for a while. Folk do seem to have played fast & loose with their names then!

With the early census' the information was given to the enumerator by someone and it may have been that as she was in the household they assumed she was a Cooper !!
