There is a Matthew Thompson in my family tree details available are:- d.o.b April 1899. born at 50 Harrow Street Gateshead Tyne & Wear. Lived with is father, mother and siblings at 91 Fleming Street Gateshead during 1911 census (then aged 12).
I have been given a photo of him in an officers uniform with baton but no other details available other than he survived to raise a family of his own. can anyone shed any light on his army service records, or give directions where to start looking. thanks. Ron

Hi Robin,
Sorry don't have any more details as yet other than Matthew Thompson married a lady called Margaret Porthouse and they had 2 children called Margaret (Peggy) and Mary (Polly).
I presume that they all still lived in Gateshead.

Would he not have been too young to have been an officer as he was only 15 years old when ww1 broke out and would have been 19 years old when the war finished?
Thanks anyway Robin for your help you all do a cracking job so keep it up.
Ron

Hi Robin,
you've really got me going now (facinating) I have used a magnifying glass on the cap badge of Matthews army photo.
It looks similar to the "Maltese Cross" it has a crown at the very top with a single flag flowing underneath, can't make out the inscription.
Thanks again.
Ron
