I live in New Zealand & almost all my grandmother's forebears seem to have followed the same line of work. I do know that our line came mostly from around the Sunderland, Monkwearmouth etc area & a couple of the sons started up theeir own shipbuilding yards which were very successful. A daughter Eleanor, of one of the Thompson boys emigrated to Lyttelton New Zealand in the early 1850's & married Lewis Marsh, my gt.grandfather. they had several children born both here in NZ & back in UK. I have no access to the Guildhall records & would also love the details from there but I do know the reason for the family return to the UK was the distressing attack & murder of Eleanor's young sister.
We could well be able to share further details if this turns out to be a match for you.

Hello Lois, you have replied a thread which is a few months old now and it is doubtful that Kim is still looking for replies. You can try clicking on her name and sending your message that way. If she still has the same email address, she will be notified.

Meanwhile, have you tried putting the names you are researching into the Search Trees box above to see if anyone else on this site has them in their tree? If you find a connection you can contact the tree owner.

If you would like help in your research, there are a lot of members willing to assist. Take a look at the 2nd message on the Community Trying to Find board for further advice. Regards. Cx

Ann of Green Gables

Thank you so much for all the information on the Thompson clan. I am the great granddaughter of Eleanor Thompson whose family emigrated to New Zealand in the 1860's to start a new ship building/servicing etc outreach in the new South Island port of Lyttelton.

I have spent some time on the Tyne & Wear site but seem to have hardly scratched the surface given what you have produced. Thank you so much. It is a bit challenging to work from the other side of the world when I have no family to ask/assist. As a newbie at this, it is wonderful to be introduced to such a willing & helpful community.
