SIBLINGS OF MARGERY THOMPSON

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Michelle Report 12 Sep 2010 17:48

I am looking for siblings of my mother, who was born in 1929 at a maternity homenamed Rokeby, a mission of hope for single mothers, in Streatham, SW London. Her mother was a Margaret Isabella Thompson who was born in the 1890's in Felling on Tyne, Gateshead. This part of my tree is proving very hard to move forward from as my mother Margery Thompson was born illegitimately to Margaret Isabella. My mother passed away in 1982 and my father has since died so finding out any information is proving really difficult for me to find. I know details of Margaret Isabellas' parents names and births, etc, but need to find out whether she had any other children (which would be my aunts or uncles).

Can anyone help me as this part of my tree has had me banging my head against a brick wall for months and months now!

So, to re-cap, I am looking for any other children (apart from my mother) born to Margaret Isabella Thompson, from Stephenson Terrace, Felling on Tyne, Gateshead, after 1929

Thanks in anticiaption!!

Michelle - as you can imagine, a name like Thompson yields loads of results when searching births, marriages & deaths.

Did Margaret Isabella come back to the North East after having your mum? Does anyone know anything about what happened to her after your mother's birth?

hi

well, its all a mystery...all I know is that my mum was born in the 'home' and that her mother Maragret Isabella Thompson was living at 1 Stephenson Terrace, Felling at the time of the birth. I can only assume she went back to Gateshead after my mum's birth. I have written to the local council/borough that hold the records for the maternity home but there is no records of a legal adoption/fostering for my mum, so stumped there completely!!

This is sooo frustrating for me as I would like to know about my mothers upbringing etc but its soooo difficult. If I had any aunts and uncles it would be great, at least then possibly I may be able to get further

Thanks you for your help so far

N.B Thompson happens to be one of the most common surnames in Gateshead too, so even more frustrating!!

Michelle, this is the only birth registered for a Margaret Isabella Thompson in the 1890's in the Gateshead area:

Births Mar 1896 (>99%)
Thompson Margaret Isabella Gateshead 10a 871

Possibly your grandma, and could determine her birth year for searching forwards. I've often found that I've got to go back over in order to go forwards!

Do you know who brought your mum up, and whereabouts?

hi

Margaret Isabella was in her 30's when she had my mum, I don't know anything about my mums upbringing at all and this is what I find frustrating....as my mum was illegitimate, things are harder to find

I would love to know if I have any aunts and uncles or other relations!

Hi Michelle,

How many possibles did you find?? I take it Robert & Susannah are her parents?

If she was 33 when she had your mum, do you think it likely that she was working down South, rather than going there to give birth. Wonder if she married at all.......would it be worth checking London marriages as well.

Yes, Robert Frazer Thompson & Susannah (nee Charlton) were her parents, I have census records for them etc

It is strange she was single at 33, and there is a possibility she was working down south, maybe I will aim my hunt that direction and see if I can find a marriage for her

Thanks Jax

I am trying to find out what profession Margaret was...maybe a teacher like her sister or maybe a nurse, as she was single and aged 33 when she had my mum in 1929 in London!
